Finally discovered this site, wish I had earlier!

I have just bought the car in the title, and will be picking it up on the 5th of January. Its only my second car, and I'm no experienced driver having only passed in Feb last year, but Im looking forward to having something with a bit of poke (my first car...err, didnt), and have been a wannabe petrol head for many years now.

Now whilst I know the only important thing is whether or not I enjoy it, I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet some people on the forum and ask for some opinions on the Sport. So, fire away, good or bad!

And while Im here, it would also be great to have some solid specs on the car, as my research has been shaky so far. I think it has somewhere north of 120bhp, but clarification on this and any other performance specs would be most welcome.

P.S. Sorry if this post bored anyone to sleep/coma/death, next post will be more succint, promise

Hi Betamax wavey

First of all you have bought yourself a cracking car there. I have had two, one that I took from 93,000 to 256,000 with no work apart from a head grind. They are very very reliable cars if they are serviced correctly. Cambelts should be done every 60k and do the tensioner while you are there. Oil plugs and filters every 10k and you won't go wrong.

Performance wise they should be putting out a solid 115bhp which while it won't set the world on fire 0-60 has a nice punch at motorway speeds due to the great aerodynamics. They will top 120mph at a push.

There is a wealth of info on these cars over on www.audifans.net so join up.

I absolutely loved my 2.0 8v Sport edition that I used to own, (see here, www.matey-matey.com/j34reh.shtml ) so I bought another one just recenly

This one:

Good luck and enjoy it!

Cheers,

Steve.

P.S. Got any pics?

Hey Steve,

Thanks for all the info, its encouraging to meet another happy owner! Thanks for the advice too, I shall make sure it is kept it top condition.

Its actually my dads old car, but his new job includes a company car (hes got a Golf TDi until the probation period is over, then hes getting my choice, a Civic CDTi 2.2 - should make the commute interesting!). I live in Carlisle, and he lives in Wimborne, so I'm driving down in a hired Focus a week tomorrow, and then coming back up the following Monday. The winding Dorset and Somerset roads, followed by an eternity on the A1 should let me get to know the 80 really well, it will be a thorough, and diverse road test!

This particular example is white (undecided whether I'm happy about this yet, but the new GTi, LP640 and GT3 seem to be bringing ice white back with a vengeance - just means more effort keeping it looking good!), has 140000k on the clock and is 4 door. Its also 16v, is your new one 8v like your last, or the same as mine? How much difference will this make to the performance do you think?

Dads warned me of a few faults (dash vents dont blow, sunroof wont tilt, rear jack adaptor doesnt work etc), but these are all cosmetic and he says the car has been hassle free from the off. From your and others testaments, it would seem the engine and box are invincible with a little TLC! All this, and I'm only paying £400, so I might put some of the other £600 I had budgeted for a car towards ironing out the kinks.

Your 80 looks gorgeous, hopefully I can get mine up to the same standard in as short a time as possible! Im unsure of what body kit is on (dont know whats standard on the Sport), but Ive always admired the 80 anyway. A damned handsome car.

As you mentioned, I had heard that the car is savage from 50 - 70 and 70 - 100, but not so hot on the 0 - 60, but compared to my first car (a 1.0l AX), it will feel like its burning rocket fuel. driving

Afraid I have no pics yet, but as soon as I get it, I will get take some shots and upload them. shoot

Well, just driven it home, and I am very, very pleased with it. Absolutely fantastic car, and so much power. The journey down in the rented Focus was dull to say the least (the whole journey is motor or dual carriage way), but even though I took the same route for the return leg, I was having much, much more fun. Really incredible car!

Glad you like it! thumbup They really hold the road well and the front end is very grippy.

It looks in good nick from the pics.

Cheers,

Steve.

Its in pretty good condition, but not fantastic. A couple of rips in the drivers seat, and staining on the rear seats, generally a little grubby too, and mold around the conecting points of the rear spoiler!

Needs a bit of sprucing, but Ill get the bucket and sponge out this weekend and give it a bath...

Yeah, it is really grippy, and feels really sorted on the road, very sure footed. I managed a foot to floor moment out of the gates of the M6 toll, which was eye opening. Lottie (my girlfriend) and I were both pinned to the seats and I was almost scared to keep pushing, the engine sounds beautiful when revved, but scary too. What was more scary, however, was the visibly decreasing fuel gauge when I did it.

Did well though, got me home on one tank (even with my toll gate indulgence), and cruised at 90 - 100 most of the way home.

Lovely
