Audi lights up its R8 supercar

It'll be a Christmas tree on wheels

Festive lighting is all around us, but Audi is flooding its new R8 sports car with LEDs. There's a total of 24 front-mounted LED driving lamps and 186 LED brake lights -- and they'll illuminate the engine too.

Due to be launched by Audi next spring priced from £76,725, the 187mph two-seater is available with an optional interior light package that not only includes LED cabin illumination, but also bathes the engine compartment in LED light, drawing onlookers’ attention to its eight-cylinder unit through its clear glass ‘bonnet’.

On the outside, and said to be inspired by the design of the Sydney Opera House, the R8’s headlamp units incorporate 12 LED daytime running lights on each side combined with bi-xenon dipped and main beam head lights.

Audi UK director Jeremy Hicks said: “The importance of seeing and being seen on the roads is obviously brought into sharp focus at this time of year, and with its new LED technology our new R8 will be pretty hard to beat on both fronts. With the help of Audi innovations such as the quattro four-wheel-drive system we have always strived to deliver high performance as responsibly and safely as possible, and this hugely impressive lighting technology underlines that fact yet again.”

Deposits for the new Audi R8 have been taken by the UK Audi Centre network since its world public debut at the 2006 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris in late September, and have already accounted for all right-hand-drive production slots allocated through to mid-2008.

I have to say, i don't like the profile of it. The Arse end is nice, but the rest of it I could take or leave really...

Lighting's nice, especially the engine.

A sure line to next year's Big Boys' Toys styling feature -- go to your local Toys R Us (or Halfords) and check out what they're including on the Small Boys' Toys there.

A few k more?

R8 - £80k (with a few options)
Gallardo - £120k

So really its half as much again.

Plus i'd wager that the R8 won't drop £30k in the first year as Gallardos seem to....

I just don't find it very covetable. It just looks so odd, contrived and awkward.

back end looks very similar to the Lotus Europa! However, I'm sure the Audi will have top notch build integrity...maybe see the LED light technology on the 2008 model year Porsche 997 as well as an adaptation of Audi's DSG gearbox, replacing the tiptronic???

Thats if the V10 R8 ever happens...

Fair enough with the V10 its a bit close to the Gallardo price, but you didn't say that in your first post...

Strikes me that it will be impossible to get an R8 for under 80k for a while, so

120K - 30K = 90K

At this level, only 10K is much closer... Unfortunately too far outside my budget in either case...

Have placed an order for one. Black with Silver fins.

Was originally quoted for delivery August 2007. That's now gone to mid 2008/early 2009 That will teach me to think about it for a few weeks. V10 version will be out by then.

I'm a huge fan of Audi's (only the cars - my experience with dealerships is shocking!).

But this is vomit

Lighting for the engine bay? I bet the engine bay lighting parts have 'made by Halfords for Audi' in very small print...

What's next, blue & green flourescents that hide under the side sills?!

It looks too much like a TT (but with all the good looks removed)...
