hey,

my girlfriends parents have a 3 year old lupo which seems to have loads of problems. a couple of months ago the steering developped a problem whereby it would make a light grating noise and was a bit light, which the garage have now fixed saying that it was an airbag contact ring problem.
at its first MOT (a few weeks ago) the garage pointed out a strange noise from the engine. it has a low frequency tapping which doesnt sound right. the garage tried to fix it but couldnt so they asked to have it back to try again.

my gf's parents have just been called up saying that they think it needs a complete new engine, which to me seems completely crazy for a 3 year old car that has done about 10000miles (at a guess).

has anyone else heard of similar problems with lupos?

that reminds me. the drivers electric window on the lupo in question are crap. you need to push the window up at the same time as pressing up!

What model is it?

Can't say that I have any experience with any of the models except for the GTI.

Check out Club Lupo for better answers than I can give.

I had a 1.7 SDi which I ran in parallel with a Toyota Yaris.

In the time the Yaris racked up 70,000 miles and the Lupo 45,000 miles, the Lupo was already proving to be more expensive to run.

The car then had recurrent problems with the oil pressure switch (according to the Leeds main dealer) --- then seized on the A1.

A specialist dealer then rebuilt the engine (no point in asking the Leeds main dealer) -- and despite replacing the oil pump, hydraulic tappits and anything else that could possibly have caused it, found nothing.

Except, once returned, it was doing 1000 miles to a litre of oil --- at 80,000 miles.

So, the Lupo is no longer with us, but the Yaris has now done 132,000 miles during which time it has had only a replacement battery and a new set of front discs --- apart from sevicing every 10,000 miles.

By comparison to the Toyota the Lupo was positively agricultural --- a car in my view, of which VW should be very ashamed.
