A3 170tdi or golf gt 170tdi
Discussion
Been considering what if anything to get as the next pair of commuting wheels. Over the last years have had 5 door versions of the new shape Astra 1.8 SRi, a 2.0GT Petrol Golf and the TDi-140 A3 for a 2 day test. None really appeared to tick all the boxes over my old SRi, well not the £20K box anyway! At the moment it's put on hold as we got the last series (1.8T) vRS Octavia. So I'd also be interested to see what other think.
The A3 looked nice, and there was a better range of interiors and colours to choose than with the Golf. There appeared more headroom in the back of the Golf, not that I sit in the back much, but the whole idea is that it can cart the old folks round now and again - not much rear room in the TVR! I kept red lining the TDi, which may be down to me enjoying the test - and the low red line, annoyed me anyway, I guess the 170 could be worse. Then there is always the feeling that you prehaps should have got the GTi. I can understand that for Business use that TDi and cruise control are important, but my rare business miles are usually done in an Airbus.
I can't see me in a Ford ST (ASBO) and as our Check VW (aka Skoda) is looking good value I can see we may be tempted to the new vRS - I hear they even put the 170 TDi these days - it's also in the ugly SEAT. I guess it will come down to the deals on offer at the time.

Try the 140 diesel too. A few people who i've spoken to say that there's not much in it between the two engines.

I've heard the 170 BHP diesel dosn't drive as well as the 140, because of turbo-lag.
This sounds like people with 140's trying to convince themselves they don't need a 170. Not only dose the 170 drive well, VW under play it's performance, road testers have got better 0-60 figures than VW claim (because it's to close to the GTi) The only reason we don't have one, is the 320d was better for motorway crusing, which is 95% of what it will do.
Just picked up 170 BHP diesel Golf...excellent mid range grunt.
Wife came out of 2.0FSI Cab...8 months old as felt ostentatious. Golf defo better mid range and possibly off the mark.
Bought new from Inchcape..saved £2900 from list, uk main dealer supplied...how the hell the other dealers can survive not being part of that group is a mystery to me.

I have ordered a Seat FR with the 170bhp unit. Have been offered the pbox which brings the power up to the Astra 888. I have heard that 170bhp unit is a "crystal unit". Never heard of this to the other day. The Germans have given up trying to tune this unit according to their forums (so I have been told).
Does anyone out there had this unit fitted to the 170 engine and or heard of problems with this engine. Many thanks.
