im fancying a passat estate around the 6k mark, either a 130 tdi or a 1.8 t 20v,i dont do massive mileages so am veering toward the petrol engine at the moment, its finding one with reasonable mileage is the problem, any advice or ownership feedback on both models is appreciated

Our Passat 130 Tdi Sport Estate (53 plate) Has Just gone back to Lex with 103K on the clock. £5995 was the price if we had wanted it.

Over three years with no problems, Get one with a full history and it well go on forever. The 130 Tdi will out perform it's petrol equvilant most of the time with much better mpg.

Got a 2000 Pd115 Sport Estate 103k miles, 1.8T feels a bit gutless compared to the PD lumps. 1.8T is better suited to spirited driving ( I have a 1.8T golf too ) , not really the Passats thing ( Although it will hustle )

Get a Sport as the suspension is alot better as is the interior

Great mile muncher and will get high 50's mpg on a run ( Seen 60+ a few times )

I have a 1.8t Sport estate tiptronic 2003 52 reg with 53k miles. Its the facelifted one and so handles and rides well. The interior build quality is exceptional and puts new Mercs to shame. It has a bit more road noise then I would like on the motorway but this is compared to say a BMW 5 series tather than a Mondeo. It is quick and punchy in the mid range and the engine is very smooth for a 4cyl. It is heavyish on fuel-averages 18mpg in London traffic, 28mpg at 90mph cruise. My logic is the same as yours..why pay a diesel premium for low miles-especially when considering the particulate pollution that the older non-EU4 diesels pump out.

I may be considering selling it for about your price range so if you are interested then PM me and I can give you some details.

Worth checking out your MAF sensor mate.
My 80k mile 4motion comfortably returns 29-31mpg on my weekly London-East Yorks journey (98% motorway).
I know the Passat body is heavier but offset that with a heavy 2.8 V6 + the 4motion transmission.
I've have thought a 1.8T would easily give 33+ mpg ?

Thanks

Had it checked over by a very knowlegeable VW mechanic who plugged in the offical factory computer. Completely clean bill of health after he cleaned out the MAF (was a bit mucky). This particular model is just heavy on fuel hence its 236g /km emission. The car is amazingly responsive and smooth so its fine really...
