Quick question - is this engine in this car any good? Mild concerns that it may be a bit slow and sound like a tractor.

well, in our 2006 Sharan sport, the 140 packs enough punch to suprise people. also returns a healthy 42 - 45 mpg in Sharan MPV form. the A4, being smaller and lighter should be a lot quicker .. on the flip side, the 140 in the A3 or the Golf is quite formidable

Its a Diesel, so its gonna sound agrigultural, but slow it wont be

Quick answer - not really by current standards

mine is certainly not quick and isn't what you'd call refined or economical either

choosing one is bordering on the worst mistake I ever made - roll on Sept'07 when I wave it (2 fingers) goodbye

I have the A4 TDI 130 now and was planning to change for the 2.0 TDI 140 early next year, but I have heard quite a few stories of heavy initial fuel & oil consumption on this engine.
I think the 2.0 is slightly more refined than the older 1.9 unit, however I think if people think that the 2.0 engine is very un-refined are perhaps people who don't like diesels full-stop.

On the move it feels quite flexible - but from a standing start it's not in the same league as the new 320d

Fine as a refined and frugal m'way tool but not really much 'enjoyment' on offer as a drivers car. Depends on what you are looking for

Thanks for the replies.

I've ordered an A4 cabrio with that engine in it (they don't do it as a 170 unfortunately), it's on a lease for which there are some deals which appear great value at the moment (£263 pcm plus Vat).

It'll be used for commute, motorways and sunny weekends so not too fussed about B-road blasts. Got Golf 16v and Ur Quattro for that....

given the rest of your garage, it sounds ideal to me
