After a very close "late braking" scenario recently full ABS styley - I decided to replace my steadily balding tyres on my S4 to serve me in the wet! I went for the ones i had before which are the Continental contact sport extra load. I went to Headley Tyres just on the A339 south of Newbury who are SO cheap at £139 a tyre all in... but I asked for 235 40 18 95 Y and I've come away and just realised I got 235 40 18 93 Y. Does anyone know what the difference is between the 95 bit and the 93 bit?

I should think that any cornering that is done on the road would not be affected by the difference between the two.
However, should you be on a track, there are two schools of thought:
Stiffer = Slightly less grip as the tyre can't bend so much, however the outright grip is higher
Less Stiff = More exploitable grip, because while outright grip is less, the way in which it would break is less severe.
Put it this way, on track, I'd want the softer, pumped up slighly harder. Either way on road its going to be personal preference.
Oopsey - its become a bit of an academic discussion as it appears they are the same, but their computer gave me an incorrect invoice reading...so I wasn't being totally blond...(in disguise!)
That is useful to know however. Yes we see track days and the Ring a few times, and I do love these tyres. Im so used to them. I think one does get used to tyres and their behaviours in extreme conditions. These conti's are the best for this car I have no doubt, they have a lovely progressive release on the track corners and bends, they catch and hold very well on exit. Feels very compatible with 4 wheel drive system... All in all great feeling...
Is there also a big difference in tyre characteristics during braking ? Is there any measurement for this?

They were on the car from new, and because the spare has never been used, I replaced the 4 on the car with the same. All I can say is, in the dry, worn out tyres are better than new ones. John
That is SO true!! My baldy tyres were brilliant! But as you say gave a bit of a problem in this wet weather we're having right now.
Im not finding any noise from the Conti's though on the S4. Completely quiet. However, saying that - I need to take the car back to headley tyres on Monday to get them to rebalance the wheels as there is a lot of viabration over 60mph which wasn't there before. Maybe that is what causes the noise - if the balancing isn't perfect? I did call Headley tyres since and they admitted that sometimes the balancing would "settle" and then wouldn't be perfect and would need re-balancing..mmm...

I think the front and rears was swapped just before I bought the car. The front/rear wear patterns are totally different and I suspect that's the cause of my noise - no vibration just varying levels of tyre roar depending on surface - esp. on the old concrete motorways!
I had a noise when I first bought mine see...... www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=49159.......I put the front wheels on the back and vice versa but it made no difference.

I have an A4 that came with sport contact 2's, I have gone over to premium contact 2's, which I dont like. I've never really found continentals noisy, but the premium contacts give a very stange 'jiggly' sort of ride,, which I dont like.
If I buy any more tyres for this car I'm going to try Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's.
