Multifunction computer goes awol

Driving along in the heavy rain on Friday night, when the screen between the dials on my Golf V GTI slowly dies. I carry on, not wanting to stop in the rain. Get home, engine off, restart, and then all is well.

I assume the water is to blame somehow, but is this a common problem?
