1.8T engine life span
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm off to a car auction this evening in search of a bargain run around, and one of the cars that is list to go through is a 1999 Passat 1.8T sport.
The car is listed as having covered close to 130,000 miles and is being disposed of as a P/Ex from a main dealer.
Are these engines quite strong, and capable of covering this kind of mileage with plenty of life left in them? Is there anything in particular that I need to be looking at.
All advise and info would be greatfully appreciated.

My golf 1.8T is going strong at 115k miles. Runs as well as the day I got it with 17k miles on it. Doesn't use oil etc... It's been chipped for the last 60k+ miles to with no detrimental effect.
I have a Passat TDI115 too and compared to a friends 1.8T Passat the petrol seems a little flat in comparison - his may need a new MAF sensor though. In general it's a very tough lump as long as it's serviced well and the cambelt gets done regularly.
It's effectively the same block from the 1.8 GTI's from the 80's so well proven!

They're more than capable of that mileage. I know of quite a few 1.8T's that have done 100K or more.
HOWEVER i wouldn't buy one with that mileage unless i could prove the service history. If you decide to buy it, first thing to do is replace the cam belt, water pump etc.

Bought it!
129k with full main dealer service history. Runs as sweet as a nut*. Really good condition all round, and a very nice drive.
*= What does the "sweet as a nut" saying mean? Nut's aren't sweet? I never understood the saying "falling head over heels" either. Head is above heels when standing normally ...... "ar$e over t!t" works much better
