Best advice I can give is forget the V5.
Drive both the V6 4motion and the 1.8T and pick the one you prefer.

V6 a cruiser, 1.8t more sporty.

Thanks for that.
Though the reason I want to go for the V5 it is not 4 wheel drive and from what I can tell there is no loss of performance with a lower weight. Also the insurance group is lower.

I test drove all 3 and found the V6 better by some way (my 2 previous cars had been VR6s so I'm probably showing some bias).
It's 2wd until traction is lost at the front so not permanent 4wd.
Due to the engine it's thirsty though, my 330ci is more economical in all circumstances.
Sorry to try and put you off a V5 - I don't think they're that great. Almost the running costs of a V6 without the power. Even a 1.8T is a much better car.

ps . . 4motion boot is big enough - if you want space get am estate car !

Thanks for replies. You are not putting me off the V5 so dont worry.
I don't know what it is about the V5? It has a little more horsepower than the 1.8t. The V5 models look a little bit more understated and most likely haven't been thrashed! I have driven a few 1.8t's and most are high milage and a little worn out. Though most have been driven as company cars. With the V5 you also get a little bit more equiptment than 1.8t and yes I know the V6 4motion are kitted out to the hilt!
What it comes down to though is that I don't want my wife scared dirving something like that in London.

If you're set on a V5, the 20v 170bhp version is much better than the 150bhp.
Check that the fans work and that it has been serviced correctly and on time.
Recaro leather was a £2k option and is a nice to have.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers guys for your help. What do you mean by the fans. Internal or Coolant fans?

i would have thought this to be a little over priced. mine has similiar spec, with the addition of cd changer, full beige RECARO leather seats, 4 brand new tyres, and only 40k on the clock. it cost £8k a little over a year ago. i wouldn't expect it to go for much less than £7k now, but i know the seats alone could be sold for near £700 on ebay. and although the V6 doesn't really fetch much of a premium over the V5, its got to be more than £800?

unless of course i'm underestimating my car's value, and someone wants to make me an offer of £8k plus!

I'd say your 4motion is worth more than £7k.
Mine is up in classifieds. X plate, 78k, recaro leather - it was sold 3 weeks ago then DVLA messed around transferring the plate. The day the new V5 document arrived the buyer found another one. The price we'd agreed was £6,600 but I felt that I could have got more.
Look on eBay, last week people were bidding more than £7,500 for an 02 reg with no leather & 38k.
Based on that I think your's is wrth well over £7k

I had a V5 up untill last year, the car was great, I got my head around keeping it (I usuall change every few years)

Untill I put the second set of cooling fans in it, A 30000 service and the last straw The lamba sensor going.

She had only done 32,000 when it went.

What a great engine, vert torquey.

I test drove a V5 and really liked it. 1.8T not really my thing as I'm not into turbos, and although I think a V6 is the optimum engine configuration I thought there might be less to wrong on the V5 (2WD an' all), and it's just that bit different. Factory leather is great, sports suspension rare but well worth having. Don't bother with the 150bhp model, 170 only.

Interesting point a little way back on the the thread about a BMW 330; very appealing. I think I want to own a Golf but drive a BMW, if you know what I mean.

Happy hunting.

I have a Mk5 2.0 TDI as my company smoke and love the mpg but still don't like turbos, or diesels.

If I didn't do mega miles I'd stick with petrol, five or six cylinders.
