Mk4 Golf GT TDI's 100K+ miles

In my view these cars will have had any niggles sorted over the years, the Tdi engines are frankly bombproof in the mechanical dept so no need to worry about turbo's etc if its looked after. Cambelts would be though so despite what the service interval says, check it visually at least every year for wear or tear regardless.
Just look at the price of older Tdi's they hold their value way above other older cars of the same era so all your likely to lose max is £1k a year max if that from now on, which quite frankly is not bad IMHO

As long as it has a full history, I wouldnt be bothered.
My Mk4 has 89,000 miles on it, was registered in 2002, and has full VAG history. The car is running as good now as it did the day I picked it up.
The only things that have been changed are the front and rear disks @ 70,000 miles, and the front grill (Bird Impalement!)
The alloys are starting to look a little scabby, but I guess I should take more care when I wash the car but at the end of the day, they are sound and still look 90% decient!
If I dont change mine early next year, I may be tempted to see if she will rack up 200,000 miles

Looks like you are in a similar boat to me, as I have a similar amount to spend on a diesel and have looked at a couple GT TDi's.
The conclusion that I have reached is that whilst they are nice cars to drive, they present exceptionally bad value for money. I know the golf is a sought after product, but you can get cars that are as good with less miles, and/or newer for the same or less money.
I've reached the conclusion that it is a waste spending £5000 on a 100k+ golf when I can get something like a Passat with less miles for £3000.
I'm sure that the golfs will go on and on no matter what the miles, but you are paying a massive premium for having a golf on the drive .... dare I suggest getting a Skoda Fabia instead?

Dont get me wrong, The Golf is expensive for what you get. When I bought my GT TDI, Skoda were not offering the sporty diesels in the vRS styled Fabia(Besides which, the interiour was particularly bad in the early models).
Also, I went to my local SEAT Garage with a view to buying a new Leon Cupra Diesel, but the tosser in the SEAT garage in Salisbury didnt take me seriously and after hassling them for 4 weeks about a test drive, and constantly being fobbed off with "its not available yet sir" I noticed it actually was avalable, and it was a demonstrator, and the guy obviously didnt want my money, so It fell to number 2 on the car list ... the Mk4 Golf.

Yer spot on really, 5k seems alot for one. 10K on a MK5 might be a better investment (would probably keep it longer too).
Ive noticed you can Get a 110ps Focus 6months - 1 year old for £8500, ok its no golf but its got about 20,000 miles on 2 years warrantee left and only £2k more than your typical MK4 Golf GT TDI.
I think 5K is a price most people are happy to spend on a car so the price seems to stagnate arround 5k, same with the old focus a TDCI one of them is £4000-£5000 (semi high millage) a nearly new one is only slightly higher.
Obviously its swings and roundabouts as the golf will depreciate less, but you loose the warrantee and have to take about 60,000 miles more on the clock when purchasing. Difficult one.
