Hi
I am at present about to purchase a Golf GTi but a casual remark from a friend suggesting that I take a look at the Octavia vRS
He says its cheaper roomier just as quick and better value for money
Any comments!!

Had a test drive in a Mk2 vrs the other weekend, got to say it was a lovely car, much nicer inside than my Mk1, seemed to handle better and had a better spread of torque.
Drive The Deal quotes £17800 with metallic, cruise, xenons, rear parking sensors, 18" alloys, Dual zone climate pack and maxidot.
You're looking at about £22K for a Golf the same spec.

I've only sat in the new golf, never been out in one but it was a nice place to be in.

Got taken round parts of Millbrooke in a VRS, was very impressed with it inside, and it was certainly quick, indicated 150 on the bowl and very impressive on the handling circuit.

Boils down to price and badge at the end of the day, are you willing to pay a chunk of cash to have the VW on the front, or go for the skoda which is 99% as good as the golf and a lot cheaper.

Test drive them both. There's not a fag paper between them to be honest.

Anyone put off the Skoda just because of the badge is an ignorant fool. The residuals on the MK1 were widely predicted to be disastrous...they got that well & truly wrong.

I'd be willing to bet the Czech built car will be better screwed together too.

Thanks
Took a test drive yesterday in the octavia. You are right it is a better all round car than the Golf.
While I was there the salesman gave me the keys of the new 170bhp vRS diesel Octavia, what a great car, quick, brilliant handling, 48-50mpg. It has given me even more food for thought.
Ah decisions decisions!!!

How does the Leon FR rate against it cousins?

Without any prior research I believe they are cheaper still than the Skoda.

About £500 cheaper if my memory is correct.

I'm looking at regaining some lost youth in a GTI. Tried the Leon FR too. My views...

FR looks good and drives well (as well as the GTI, maybe), but the interior is just not as "nice" it seems like the toys my three year old has - lots of buttons which work sometimes, but don't convince me they'll last and don't get me started on the gear knob. (DSG is coming before the end of the year on petrol models though)

GTI great all rounder, feels like a good place to be, but really, really expensive for a shopping trolley. Was vaguely thinking about a 2nd hand 03ish M3 for the same money, but decided the M3 was just too expensive to feed. Second hand GTIs seem to be daft money at dealers, not sure if they'll be feeling like doing a deal - there seem to be silly priced ex demos which have been knocking around for a while
