Anyone got one, had one or driven one? Whaddya reckon?

I'm thinking of buying one as there are some pretty good bargains out there on the second hand market. I know it's gonna have slightly inert handling etc (I'm a veteran Audi owner), but the attraction for me is a well specced, well built hatch with a V6 under the bonnet.

Cheers

Just FYI, we're an Audi family too. However we picked up a new Golf GTI on Saturday. I must say I'm quite impressed. Our old TT felt very wooden in comparison and the 2.0T engine is ample pokewise (still running ours in of course).

I was watching one of those Police on Camera TV shows a few nights ago and they were doing Traffic Officer driver training in A3 3.2s. So they must be pretty good.

i test drove a few earlier this year and decided to go for a Mk4 R 32 instead, much sharper and more focused than the A3.

It's up for sale by the way !!

I nearly brought one, what put me off in the end was
- as a new car, it lost too much straight away, 2nd hands examples weren't selling so was onto a loser from the off, good second hand price as a buyer though.
- MPG was dire as my everyday car, expected to average low 20's, it wasn't so much the cost, having had abig engined small car, I got fed up with visiting the petrol station every other day.

Hmmm, fuel consumption is something I hadn't thought about. Tbh though I live in central London so it's just going to be a weekend car and something to hit the supermarket in. I do have a bit of a lead foot, but I've only recently got my license back after a speeding ban so I need to be a bit careful anyway!

Thanks for the thoughts guys - keep em coming!

We got the Golf GTI partly because of the economy. Its already averaging 33.5mpg in its first 100 miles of driving. 38-40 on a run. Well over 30 tootling around. Probably not much less in stonk mode. Who needs diesel?

I've got one, a good car IMO; Handling is good, great grip, fast over all types of roads and conditions, particularly good on high speed sweeping 'A' roads, smooth powerful engine with 6 cyl soundtrack and effortless overtaking yet discrete looking and comfortable, a bit of a 'sleeper' (looks the same as the 1.6 'shopper'). No doubt someone will be along to criticise the fact that it is nose-heavy or say that the the 4wd is not 'proper' Quattro but we don't all drive (or want to drive) race/rally cars for the road.

I've been very happy with mine, the only criticism I've got is that it's had a few electrical 'Gremlins' (sorted under warranty so far). The fuel consumption only averages around 23mpg (actually quite good considering the performance) which is something to consider, mine's a DSG which is an excellent gearbox BTW and suits the engine well.
