Has anyone any experience of using VAG.COM?

I have bought a OBD II USB lead and downloaded version 607.2 software from Rosstech.com but when I plug the lead into the USB port and select the USB option and the "TEST", it comes up with a box saying "Port status: OK, Interface: Not found). Have you any idea why it does this or how to solve it?

When I press the LED button next to it the computor does some thinking and then comes back with some numbers so that seems ok.

Many thanks in advance

Stephen

I think the interface only works when you plug it into the car. Thats what i had to do with the old serial cable i still use.

I tried it plugged into the car and it still came up with the same message.

Just a thought, what position does the ignition have to be at to run the diagnostics?

Cheers

The ignition has to be on, but the engine does not need to be running. Did you follow the USB driver install instructions OK?

Steve

I just plugged the lead into the back of my laptop and it said new USB device found etc.. So the answer to your question is probably not! I have just been on to the Ross Tech website and seen some USB installer info so I will read it, follow the instructions, and give it another go. I havent got any drivers for the lead, does this make any difference or should the computer recognise it when I follow the correct procedure?

Many thanks

Is it just me, or is it very hard to remember to call it "vagg com". I sometimes forget and my wife tells me off.

Other than that, I'm still using the old serial port version with the old software in freeware mode so can't help.

Edit: Have you tried sending a support request to RossTech themselves?

Is your lead an official Ross Tech lead or one from ebay?. If the latter is is likely to not actually be a USB interface but is a serial>USB lead, in which case you have the wrong option selected in the software. You need to choose one of the serial ports 1-4. The only lead which works over USB is the official lead.

Yes, I have. With mine I needed to load a USB driver and configure a virtual com port. On mine I connect a USB cable, but I have the driver configured to use COM4.

Im not having much luck with this! I thought it would be simple!!

It is not a genuine Ross Tech lead, it is one I got from ebay.

I tried following the USB driver instructions on the Ross Tech website but it wouldnt recognise it so I emailed Ross Tech and got a fairly blunt e mail back saying that unlees I have purchased software from them and registered then go away!

As it is not a genuine one, how can I configure it to use it in one of the COM ports?

Has anyone bought a genuine Ross Tech lead? Could be a last resort.

Is Ross Tech the only company that does the software? If they are, doesnt that render every non Ross Tech lead useless?

Sorry to be a pain with all the questions! All I want to do is find out why my Engine management light is on and this seemed the cheapest way of doing it!!

I initially bought a generic lead off Ebay - will work with correct driver installation(link on the sellers Ebay listing). This lead will only work with software version 4.09 or less and only in freeware mode. Ross tech quite rightly told you to take go and procreate as they do all the R&D for this diagnostic software.

I decided I wanted full use of Vag com so bought the real deal(comes with inbuilt dongle for software activation). Excellent customer support and latest software. My advice is go to Rosstech direct.

Mine is also a far east clone cable, but I did buy the software from Ross Tech. I don't blame them for not supporting other peoples hardware and software TBH, what did you expect?

Do you blame them? You haven't bought anything from them, in fact you've bought a cheap knock-off of their product rather than buying the real thing from them, but you expect free support from them? confused

------

Edit: Do you definitely have a proper USB cable, or is it one of the old serial cables that have been around for ages with a serial-to-USB converter on it?
If it is the latter then you need to tell the software that you have an RS232 / serial connection and tell it which virtual COM port the USB converter is creating. From memory the VAG COM software only supports COM1-COM4 so you may need to go into the properties of the USB converter and set it's COM port to, say, COM4, as these converters sometimes default to COM7 or COM8.

Of course, if it is not a serial cable with USB converter then ignore the above.

I still cant get it to work!

When I e mailed Ross Tech I just thought they were a offering free software, didnt realise that they provide complete support. So no, I dont blame them for telling me to s*d off!

I have looked on their web site and I really cant justify paying the several hindred Dollars for something that I can pay a specialist £35 to do for me or even get another friendly forum member to look at it for me

Call me naive, but I just thought it would be a case of buy the lead, find the software and job done!!

The lead I have got is definitly a USB lead so by the sound of it I just need to find some where else I can get a version of the software from that will work (Any suggestions anyone?). If the USB installer wont work, how do i convert the USB post to a COM port so that I can use some earlier COM software?

Alternatively, when Victor Meldrew bought just the software from Ross Tech, how did you know which one you needed to work with your clone lead and how much did it cost (if you dont mind me asking?

Thanks for the help, as you may have guessed Im not very computer literate!!

The only way you are going to get the "Ross Tech" Software to work is to buy an original Cable from the company. I brought a cable from Ross Tech, for about £245 including import duty. It VAG COM KIT saved me allot of money over the year I have had it, and paid for itself.

This year I have had to scan my car for small problems 7 time, maybe more. 7 x £40. Would have cost me at the dealers or a specialist £280. And VAG COM can do so mush more then just diagnose car problems. It really is a professional peace of Kit. Worth every penny.

Thanks to everyone that helped me with this problem, I have now managed to get it to work!

I was trying to use a too new version of the software with a dodgy lead!!

Did what was recommended by making the USB port a COM port, downloaded version 311 and hey presto, it works!!

I can already see why people upgrade to a registered version but for now it should be fine.

Great. Glad you got it sorted. You can ususally find meanings of the codes which don't get translated in the shareware version by googling if you need to.

I got mine off ebay but it was from a guy in the UK that couldnt get it to work! It looks exactly the same as this one.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Vag-Com-Com

It is definitley a "cheap" copy and I could only get mine to work with VAG-COM software version 311.2 from www.rosstech.com.

What I had to do was reconfigure one of my USB ports as a COM port as the Rosstech software wont recognise the USB lead on the earlier version. I had a bit of a game getting mine to work but managed to after a bit of playing around.

I hope this has helped but if you have any more questions, give me a shout.

Regards

Stephen
