I've heard stories of water getting into the tailgate of the Mk4's and causing problems. I've also heard of the rear wash hose coming loose and getting the roof lining wet.

Is this common?

I'm thinking of looking at a golf where the wash wipe has failed, and need reassurance that the handle mechanism isn't going to go next, or rust is likely to appear.

The failed wiper isn't a massive issue to me as I'd like to remove it and fill the hole as well as remove and smooth the VW badge also - but will still want to get into the boot!!

The wiper's wash shaft, running through the centre of the wiper pivot, tends to rust up over time, and then split when operated. This causes the wiper motor gear mechanism to fill with washer fluid and leak out into the boot. It's fairly easy to fix if you can find some tubing of approximately the same size to glue/solder in place of the broken section. Drill out the tight spot at the wiper arm end and it shouldnt happen again.

The tailgates on mkiv's are fairly well galvenised, and so a leak here shouldn't cause a rusty tailgate, although on mine it did cause the boot catch switch to fail (intermittently, causing alarm issues..).

From a paint issue, well, on mine the tailgate itself still looks great after 8 years, but the paint on the aluminium handle casting is beginning to flake off.

best advice I had after having to shellout £150 for the wife's MkIV was to check mine and secure the washer pipe with a cable tie.
2 years later and still going strong.

If the rear wash wipe has failed, check that the failure isnt cos its pumping water into the hatch. if it is, then its probably gonna knacker the wiper if its not already done it.

Had this on my wife's old car (2.0 that they 'called' a GTi ....hoho)

Washer hose leaked onto the alarm contacts and the darned thing kept going off. Fixed under warranty so can't gives clues as to details/cost etc. but they found it straight away due to having seen it a couple of times before.
