A word to the wise if I may,

When you're having all these bits smoothed and filled, make sure it's done in two stages. Bog is notorious for sinking so you'll need to level it off first then once it's set, re-apply some more to fill it properly.

Don't skimp on the paint either, make sure it's blended into the other panels properly and there is no micro blistering or other such shitty spray work.

I would get it done professionally so I think they weld metal mesh behind and filler that in so you dont get cracks etc.

Whats the insurance like with those declared mods?

Also, how you going to handle the MOT when you need to swap the old CAT back onto the car?

I would have personally left the car standard and enjoyed driving the thing ... you don't want to get caught out by the insurers or an eagle eyed copper who decides to take you town on your insurance cert. declarations...

ETA: Otherwise, nice first car mate

funny how all these young nippers spend months debating over what car to get, poo-pooing loads of sensible ones, and then end up buying girly cars hehe

only kidding...hehe

girl. hehe

Nice little standard looking Polo. I suggest you keep it looking stock, run it for a year or two and build up some no claims. Then buy something a little more juicy. Remember, nobody will want to buy it once its been changed.

By changing the car's appearance you immediately attract attention from the Police. Keep it stock looking and you slip by unnoticed (relatively).

I must say that I am very pleasantly suprised - nice tidy motor, tastefully modified and quite a looker. Certainly not what I'd have expected from you Tim hehe

How first cars change over the years! Most lads have shopping trolleys these days as theirs, i guess because they are cheap and plentiful and you don't actually have to know anything about cars to run one. My first car looked like this pic below, bought when I was 14 for the princely sum of 60 pounds (we was robbed hehe ), my dad and i restored it over 3 years so i could run around in it when at school. uber cool. Had flames painted down the sides of it at one point too!!

(not my actual car, but idential except mine has spoked wheels)

and somewhere under boxes and cobwebs in my mum's garage it's still there .. really must get around to digging the old girl out again

Don't think I'd extend to the mods that Tim's talking about, but I think some things make a car look a bit better - clear front indicators etcfreshen up the look, as would colour coded door handles etc. Most cars these days are modular build, so you can fit items from higher spec cars (I remember trawling scrap yards when I had my first few cars) to make it a nicer place to be...

I'm sorry but WHY?!?!?!?

soapbox

Having spent thousands in the past modifying cars that are then worth bu66er all and, as has already been said, attract loads of attention for the old bill, my conclusion has been that its just not worth it.

Why spend all that money when if you wait a couple of years and with the money you save from not doing the mods, and in saved insurance, as as soon as you mention the word 'Modified' to the insurance company they just think of a big number and then double it, and then go and get a car that you actually want.

The first car I bought myself was a Spitfire as well and I got more respect (and pulled more laydees!!) in that than any one else I knew with all kinds of modifed cars.

The best bit of advice that some one gave to me (which I still use today) was that you will never turn a donkey into a race horse.......

Sorry, rant over!

Chavvy = Spoliers, LEDs, the result of reversing quickly into Halfords in a Ram Raid stylee

Euro/German Look = Small wheels but with the widest tyres squeezed on, less is good type attitude, use OEM stuff, makes you look a bit wierd when obsessing over deleting all sorts of exterior bits.

Personally, I never got behind the whole Euro/German look, I struggled for long enough over the 17" wheels I had on the Golf.

Personally, having now got my head out of my arse over the image a BMW portrays, I much prefer the original look, and just bloody driving the thing.

Sideways = Fun thumbup

aye! nice car you've got there, neil. The 2.8 is one smooth and torquey engine yes

Plus, 'Look' doesn't replace RWD and six-cylinderdom driving

Ok ok - you win, but she looked nice for a bit though.

But since a certain 'incident' resulting in passenger side 'improvements' it's looked pants
