I'm still in the market for a reliable 5 door hatch run around (to fill the cavernous gap between my two other motors) and have read good reviews on the turbo and supercharged TSI Golf. I'm off to test drive one tomorrow. Anyone know of any reason I should go for another engine?

Also, as I probably won't be able to thrash the test car (well not much evil ) How is the Mk5 Golf (GT spec) on high speed twisties?

TIA

Steve

personally I believe 'performance diesels' to be an oxy-moron

I'd be getting either a lower power diesel or a GTI depending on which is closest to meeting your requirements

ahh, sorry, misread the title..assumed you meant the 170 brake TDi

however, coincidentally, my response still holds to an extent...isn't the GT pretty close to the GTI on price...or at least the price of a loaded demo car?

What car tested the 140bhp version and it looks rather good. They said it was a very good car with good performance, low emmisions and a quality cabin. It did nearly 40mpg overall. They put it against the Mazda 3 2.0 petrol. The 170 is about £17k if you hunt around.

Well it's 3 k more, higher insurance bracket, does less miles to the gallon and as it's a company car the emissions mean it'll cost more in tax.... and it's only half a second quicker to 60 than the GTi. I need it mainly for Mrs Get's shopping trolly and long trips south to visit aged mother... hence the mpg being a factor. I already have a sports car to go quick. This, I need to be sensible.

...but ta for the input.

I'd go fo the diesel, alot better through the power band.

Tried the 1.4 and didn't like it at all, continually searching for gears which drove me a bit daft. Possibly as it was brand new and hadn't bedded in.

I wouldn't overlook the 170bhp diesels. I was up your way a few weeks back in my dad's 140bhp Octavia and i was rarely wanting for power except on the newer EU type roads.

Quite interested in hearing from anyone who has driven one of these beasties - the folks are considering one and I wanted to give them some opinions from those who have tried it.

followed one today , quite nippy they are , as for the diesel thing ive got the vectra chipped to around 190-200ps and the shove it gives in 3rd and 4th is pretty intoxicating , great fun just wish vauxhall could make the thing handle , torque steer can be quite frightening on a poorly surfaced B road yikes

Test drove TSI GT 170 today.

Thoughts - all IMHO.

Very impressed by how nippy it was. Certainly quicker than my old BM Mini Cooper S. Pulls well right up to 7k revs. Pi55 easy to drive. You can hear the supercharger (just), but it seamlessly changes to the turbo at 3k revs. Not much body roll - brakes good and progressive. Seating position a little high and upright for me, but comfortable if a little unsupportive. The test car was an Auto, which I didn't like... it never seemed quite sure when to change back up in sport mode - which brings me to it's worst feature: The noise. Which isn't pretty. Sounds like an oil burner and fairly stangled at high revs. When cruising it's fine, but in spirited driving I suggest keeping the stereo on fairly loud.

In short... much quicker than I thought (It's right up there with the GTi - as shown by the stats) and at £17k (street price) with ESC, Traction, ABS, Climate, and a 5 star safety report - a well sorted package.

I'll probably get one - save all those 'oh so expensive' Aston miles.

I don't understand why anyone would buy one of these at 18k odd + options. They're a few mpg better than a GTi at best and the price is too similar for comfort. They have less kit (dual climate, some of the lux options are std on GTI). GTI looks better too. But they do have lower emissions so you save a few quid in car tax (or company car tax if that's your focus). There is also more to go wrong, and that poor old 1.4 engine is being worked harder than a 2.0 lump however much engineering VW put into it.

I refer the right honourable gent to my reply earlier:

Well it's 3 k more, higher insurance bracket, does less miles to the gallon and as it's a company car the emissions mean it'll cost more in tax.... and it's only half a second quicker to 60 than the GTi. Having checked out MPG (2k per month), Insurance, Company Tax, more initial cost/lease - the GTI would cost me the best part of £200 per month more... and as I say, I already have a sports car. This is to be a shopping trolley and dog transport. And it's 17k almost fully loaded. But thanks for the input.

As for things going wrong... VW will fix them FOC. It will be long gone before an MOT or lack of warranty.

Some good feedback there - I'll hopefully get a shot of the TSI myself if they get a 24 hour test drive so interested to see if my experience is similar to yours!
