I'm trying to find out more info about the S2, anyone know performance figures and any owners on here with stories of fantastic reliability to help convince me to buy one.

Thanks

Like all Audis of that era they are fantastically reliable and bulletproof, esp if not over-tweaked. Under-braked if you make full and frequent use of the power available. Get a later one too, with the six-speed gearbox.

yes

An utterly fantastic car! Believe the hype!

I have had one for 2.5 years as my weekend and show car, and it really is a wolf in sheeps clothing. NOBODY knows what is it yet it pulls like a train. Mine has 280BHP and 300ftlb of torque (remapped), will hit 60 in 5.5 seconds and touch 160 mph. The "in gear" acceleration and punch from the turbo charger is the best bit though cloud9It has been utterly reliable too but as they are becoming older they do start to need a little money spent on them as parts have been on them for 10+ years.

The MPG on a remapped one will be 22 - 24mpg and much less if caning it.

However as already stated they are bullet proof and wonderfully well built. Find yourself a good one and it will be a keeper once you have fallen for it. (The standard brakes are not great though and for hard driving Porsche upgrades are recommended )

To give you an idea of running costs, I would allow for £1500 - £2000 per year including tyres and servicing etc. You can get this figure down if you do all your own work but some of it is tricky and requires some specialist tools. (Cambelt service £400)

Mine has done 160,000 miles and still looks and drives like new. During my ownership I have replaced the following major parts:

Clutch , master cyl, slave cyl
Both radiators
Oil Cooler and oil lines
Front discs and pads, rear discs, calipers and pads.
It has had no engine or transmission work and it on the original exhaust
And lots of trim etc (but I am now into concours boxedin )

Contact me via my profile if you want to know more, or as already stated, see you over here: www.s2forum.com

Cheers,

Steve

ETA: Come down to Castle Combe on Saturday to Audi Driver International and the S2Forum bunch will be there on a stand. You may even blag a passenger ride on track. I will be in the Concours area so come and say hi!

They are pretty good bits of kit...in the 6 years I have had mine, only broken down when a radiator hose perished. As others have said, keep them serviced and they will do on and on. Brakes aren't the best...engine is superb. Body is galvanised, so no rot. Maintence costs - last year mine has cost me around £500... it's 120k now...

As to performance - my old bird is the original Audi Avant press car...and was timed in 'Fast Lane' at 0-60 in 5.4!! www.s2-audi.co.uk/articles/fast_lane_93.htm
As Steve said, in gear accelaration really is a hoot...and you'd be surprised what it can embarrass!

Find a good one, and it will keep you happy.

Cheers

David

Indeed we will, you can get a good feel between standard / lightly modded (Fat Audi 80)/ heavily modded.

So if you find the time pop down, it will be as good a chance as any to see 25+ S2's in one place at a given time, and you never know, one of the guys may be looking to sell?

BTW any of you ABY guys have experience with the Quattronics Coil-pack conversion? The POS and coils on my AAN are playing up again and I'm considering this untidy but apparently effective mod.

Do a search on S2forum, there are a couple of big threads on it. Its not my bag personally as I don't want to lose the coilpack cover. IIRC it works fine without the cover but WITH cover the packs will overheat very quickly. I think it works out a good couple of hundred quid cheaper for 5 instead of OEM ones.... (Corey on S2Forum is the proprietor of Quattronics and seems like a good guy.)

If it were me I would bite the expensive bullet and put OEM coilpacks on the car to keep it looking right, standard and with better residuals...

Cheers,

Steve.

I spoke to Corey about this a while back and fitted a new POS specifically to keep it looking neat when I was plannning to sell the car. Now I'm keeping it, typically the other POS and or a Coil-Pack is on the blink so I'm considering his upgrade again. Do you happen to know if he's going to Castle Coombe tomorrow?

Typical I log on only to find out I could have spent the day looking at S2's rather than bathroom suites!!

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm after something different and the S2 has that solid Audi Coupe look combined with real performance. It's just what I wanted to hear. I'll be in a position to buy one in a couple of months (once the bloody bathroom is fitted and paid for), 2007 should be a very good year for motoring.

Well if you can make it, there is going to be a virginia water meet on November 12th. I will be there with my S2 and I will work on trying to get a few more there so you can have a good nose around .

I've got one, I used to have two.
Mine is a real car (avant) and you get things in it, unlike Fatty's coupe
Fancy losing out to a TT in the show and shine. rolleyes
RS2 spec is relaible which is 315bhp.
Brakes are crap, but I can sort that out if you get one.

Can you ALL go back to the S2Forum? I was here first and I don't need you lot bringing the standard of the threads down. rolleyes

(The TT was only bloody 3 years old with about 20,000 miles on it....) I'm not bitter...

S2 = Great car.
I once committed heresy on PH by stating that in many ways an S2 was a better car than a Ur Quattro yikes.
The S2's 230bhp engine is fantastic and remains superior to many more modern cars. I thought about a TT 225 to replace mine and thought again after driving one. It felt like the handbrake was on and sounded rather dull in comparison.
No reliability problems but as everyone noted, the standard brakes aren't up to much.
Not many about with sensible mileages now but well worth a look yes
