Just experienced something very strange - got into car this morning (one month old A6 saloon) shut the door with normal force (didn't have enough energy to give it a really good hard slam at 6.30 am on a Monday morning) and the back window shattered and fell into the car.

Fortunately it was dry this morning - would have made a proper mess of the interior if it had been raining!

Car is with Audi now to be repaired - they suspect a flaw in the glass!

Given how rare this is, just wondered if anyone else had experienced the same thing - am worried that if it is likely to happen again, next time I may not be so lucky with the weather.

Certainly woke me up!!!!

I read the other day on another forum that this is quite common at this time of year - reason given by a windscreen company was that people start to use their heated screens for the first time in a while.

On your car, does the heated rear screen come on automatically with low temp? And did you turn the ignition on before shutting the door?

Never even got so far as putting the key in the ignition - literally happened as I got in and closed the door behind me.

Also, what with the weather we've had since I got the car (one month ago today), haven't ever used the rear-demist-heat function - regardless, it only comes on if I press the appropriate button - doesn't happen automatically.

Many years ago I had this happen to me in an Alfa romeo GTV. It was winter and I think the rear screen heater was on. Was sitting in the car with engine juts idling and - bang- rear window just shattered into a million toughened glass pictures. For years I thought it may have been some kid with an air rifle.
