Upgrade the wiring loom, did it on my mk2 and it made the lights better than my current MK4!

Make or buy a loom that connects the lights to the battery with good quality cable that is activated through a relay by your existing lighting circuit.

If you simply replace the lights you'll have the same power delivered by the same wiring so you'll see no improvement in the quantity of light.

Yeah when you measure the voltage at the bulbs on a mk2 it's like 10.5V, when you use the uprated loom and decent cable you get ~13.5V on the bulb, it's loads brighter!
