Audi A4 (2000) heater Fan not working - Help

All of the indications are that the climate control functions are working but the fan is not responding or working at all.
I have tried to locate& identify, without success, the relay that controls it although I have treid checking the relays located undet the steering wheel. The one behind the glove box looks probable but can't test it.
I have heard tell that there is a know problem with the heater fans but can find no refernce to it on the web.
The Haynes manual is next door to useless as the wiring diagram is not for the year model I have despite the book claiming to cover that year!

I took the lower dash off both sides on Saturday and played with the relays - checking the ones I could - but no joy. I couldn't get it to work.
Put it all back together resigning myself to booking it in with Lion Garage in Leicester (Indi Audi specialists) but Mrs TT has had to go to Harrogate for a conference - she reported this morning that the fan was working when she went for fuel last night and OK all the way to Harrogate - Fingers crossed
