S3 - prices affected by new S3?
Discussion
I actually think you may see a rise in the prices, as the new S3 has had a mixed response. I think a lot of current S3 owners are a bit dissappointed and may hold on to the original car, keeping demand high.
If I'm wrong and all the current owners decide to update, then prices will reduce as more cars enter the market. Even so i think your being a bot optimistic at £10K

Why is it these cars hold their value so well? I have read how they are an excellent point to point car but have also read of expensive things going wrong. I was behind one the other day and it looked great and has reignited my interest in them after previously dismissing them because I thought they looked a bit dated.
I think they hold there value so well because there are very few cars if any that offer the same mix of practicality, pace (more so if remapped) and the total sure footedness of the 4WD. I think the S3 is probably one of the best cars for making progress in all conditions on english roads in total comfort (Audi like to point out there's rain for over half the year in the UK) - unless you can afford a 4WD 911.
I also still think they have one of the best interiors of any car, I've done 60,000miles in my car over the last 3 years and I can't think of a better place to have been. I also don't think the new car has raised the game as far as the old one over the bog standard S3 and know a few people with old S3s or A3 3.2Qs that have cancelled their orders because it's not special enough.

I seriously doubt there'll be a rise in prices (!) as the residuals are already excellent. £10k would have bought a 1 owner, 79k miles S3 in ming blue with full leather, but although the car was orginal and clean I appreciate the miles were a bit high and it was probably a comparatively low price. Unfortunately I didnt have the cash available!
As to the question as to why the prices are high, I think it is partly due to the build quality and that there isnt much that is directly comparable. However, I think they need a remap to get the best from them, as I drove one recently and although it felt very solid I wasnt exactly blown away by the performance.
