I've had mine a little over a month - see piccy on profile. It's the 1.8T Quattro. Not driven another version so I can't give you a comparisson but I am very pleased with it so far.
Bought it as the 'sensible car' to keep the Griff company. Using it for all maner of motorway and practical driving. Very good to drive long distance and zippy round town. Also handy for shifting recyling, moving friends belongings, beer runs etc.
Suspensions is a bit harder than some other things I test drove (Alfa 147, Beemer 3series) and it's low - but not as low as the Griff - meaning I can't get it in my parents' drive without grounding it, but it goes over speed bumps and down farm tracks (!) perfectly well.
I get about 31mpg driving around town and 34mpg on the motorway.

cant go wrong - good choice!
had my 225 S3 for 6mths now, running 17s - Audi wouldnt gtee 18s at the time.
no real problems, stress fracture in front screen and the rear washer is knackered (common fault?!?) - both to be replaced by dealer @ end of month.
couldnt have picked a more fun/serious car (yup practical if needs to be), that said 13k in and front shoes are in need of replacement (bridgestone 020s) and thats mostly motorways....OK, with A road and city cornering - still undecided on replacements, awaiting advice, but looking at circa 100 per corner.
As for mpg, LisaG if your getting that much i need to borrow your light foot i am getting (optimax) 32 tops on motorways, i am closer to 27 in the city... !! just wait till i get back from Nurburg for some early teens on the mpg stakes

Loved my S3, and miss it! Its a great alround car! I was getting 22MPG for the town stuff and 28-30MPG on the m'ways!
I seemed to get though tyres quiet quickly(mich pilots), needed fronts after the first 8000miles but that was hard driving, people seem to be saying good things about the TOYO Proxys TS-1's, i have them on the Tuscan and cant complain at all!
With regard to the 18's i know a couple of people who have them even a couple on 19". If you need specific questions answered then try www.tyresmoke.net (they have quiet a large Audi contingent!) or www.audiworld.com.

Thanks you all the replies, a practical car is what i really need, i'm going to wait to see what the new S3 3.2 is like before i make any decisions, tried out a 03' 130 TDI sport last week and thats plenty of fun to drive with 50mpg, it kept up with a 2.5 V6 Vectra on the motorway, with 229lbft of torque it felt the same pulling as the chimaera 400 at 80mph in top.
