S6 / RS6 differences
Discussion
Not being an Audi expert....
Can anyone tell me the fundamental differences between the S6 and RS6?
I know the RS6 has wider arches and the V8 is turbocharged (twin?) but what else is changed?
For real world is there a huge difference? I'm bearing in mind this would be a great motorway hooner but would the RS6 handle being thrown about a lot more than the S6 or is the difference more pandering to a whim rather than worth paying 10k extra for. (S6 avant circa 15k, RS6 avant circa 25k)
How do these cars really handle? Not interested in stereotypical answers a la performance car mags, more interested in unbiased real world "I've driven it/owned it" opinions.
Older RS4 (v6) a worthy competitor to these or not worth buying due to being rather dated in comparision?
Thanks for your help folks :-)

agree with the above - check out RS246.com for specs of both.
I have an RS6 but have driven the B5 S4 and the S6....theres a world apart - an S6 is an A6 with some different trim and a V8 ...its a quick car by 'normal' car standards....the RS6 is something else - with a mild remap you have a 500bhp car, that will do 10.5 to the ton mid to high 4's to 60 and 185mph ...and you can play in the wet or dry
It will stay with (and see off) most 'sportscars' in a straight line...even with a few passengers and luggage...which is most amusing
for an everyday practical proposition then I dont think the combination of power, grip, comfort, load carrying, and the level of 'discreetness' can be beat.
Handling wise - its not quite an M5...but the 10% or so it loses out in outright chuckability it makes up 5x over once the rain comes down or on a winters morning....its no sportscar, but drive it smooth and its surprisingly agile at 9/10ths.

Not sure if running costs are similar. You can expect to get through a set of tyres a year ( a few quid short of 200 each ) A service will set you back 600 quid and the cars that are coming into the 'that's affordable' bracket will be nearing 40K miles which is when you need the major belt service which comes in at 12-1500. No matter how I drive it I can't seem to get any different to 19.3mpg as an average. It's also 80 quid to fill up. (about 400 mile range)

completely agree...the S6 may be slightly cheaper...but not much..you still have 8 spark plugs, 9.5L oil etc , ...I avg high teens in the RS6, tyre wear is bad for a 'normal' car but good when compared to 'sportscars' (4WD helps) - its a 1.8ton high powered uber wagon so expect consumables/running costs to be high im afraid.
Price wise - unless you have deep pockets then Id buy from a main dealer with Audi extended warranty included - a nice one is £30-35 - you could go high miles/private sale mid £20K's but its still a lot of money, and IIRC the engine/box is £15K+ for a replacement...remember its a niche market job, Cosworth tuned etc and pretty rare and expect prices accordingly...it was a £60 car new ...
just a note the s6 shares the same wide arches as the RS6 and indeed the A6 4.2 Quattro.
RS6 just had a deeper front spoiler and rear apron fitted.
I ran an S6 Avant for a few years and it was probably the best all round car Ive ever owned.
Not ballistic like the RS in a straight line but there wasnt much that could keep up with it cross country!
