Decided to buy a 2nd key (as only one when I bought the car).
Bought it obviously from local dealer and was amazed to find that it was £103 inc. VAT !!! Now I have to get it coded to the car as well !!

yeah %-wise based on the purchase price of the car that sounds quite reasonable...

Maybe so, but it would cost the same if it was a Golf 1.4 worth about £3k.

The whole key thing is nothing more than a monopolistic ripoff. £100 for a key, another £100 to code it to the car, add the vat on and you're looking at £235, which is bloody ridiculous, wether you're on £4.75 an hour or Bill Gates! All the car companies are in on this rip off.

Thats rather un PH isnt it?

As Daz rightly points out the cost for replacement immobiliser keys is an absolute rip off, these things are produced in massive quantities using electronics that in no way cost the amount that they are charged to the customer.

Micra keys are £115 as I remember.

Its utterly absurd and the value of a mans steed doesnt come into it one bit.

It certainly seems cheeky.

Then again, 4 platic centre pieces (4 lugs/piece) and adhesive '7' stickers for my R400? £21.

Still, imagine the cost of hair gel alone for these places' sales sharks?

Back to Audi: like Mercedes, they are supreme architects of the uber shaftkreig.

BMW do nearly as well but have lost that cachet which all professional, suburban 30 somethings aspire towards and thus, don't quite extract that last, congealed nugget of butt-directed uriah: hence you see 'affordable' 5 and 7 series relative to their higher mileage compadres from Ingoldthingy and wherever the hell Merc are these days.

They are all hard temples of bejewelment to resist and for packaging and presentation you have to admire them.

Personally, I despise them but like Bernard Manning, I hate everybody.

I sympathise. To obtain a spare key for my Alfa 156 I had to:
Drive round trip of 60 miles to nearest main dealer with driving licence, V5, and passport.

Make return journey 3 weeks later after they had received the key from Italy, pay £112 for the key, in return for which they were unable to code the electronic door lock buttons because they'd forgotten to get the PIN number from their computer system on the Friday (despite knowing it wasn't online on Saturdays)
Make a third journey for them to finally code the elctronic door locks
So all in all cost about £150, plus wear and tear and lost time.

and would you like us to service the car for you, sir? err...no thanks

I wish.

I can't find a current shape 5-series touring under £20,000, excepting 520i/d.

Give it a few days, Leo, give it a few days.

Which one'd you find acceptable, 525/30 or 35d? Certainly a 525d I used recently was in practice, fabulous in almost every real word context.

Hand on 18 months and the bigguns will be approaching that money although I don't think franchised dealers will be interested by then.

Nope, 2 door locks, barrel, boot lock and keys.

Not too bad in the scheme of things. Cost the same to replace the locks on the house.

Personaly, I would NEVER buy a car with only one key. It had two key's when it left the factory, so someone must have the other. John

When I bought the car I did not know it only had one key. However, to confuse your theory, what is to stop the previous owner having more than 2 keys cut and yet only 2 reaching the new owner?? You could never be sure you had ALL the keys of any car you buy.

Obviously a bright chap to make such an informed comment!!

To elaborate for this creature, I only made the posting as I and others feel that some of the charges levied by manufacturers when they have a monopoly is totally unrealistic. This applies whatever the individual's financial position is.. eg I am buying a 360 Modena soon as a weekend toy(because I love cars), but I still baulk at the guts of £200 for a key including coding to my car!!

525d will be adequate for the family barge, although I will be tempted if 530d prices are not too far away. Will have to test it back to back with 525i, as I've never owned a diesel before.

Must get bought before the family hols next year as I spent about 8 hours cramming stuff into every spare corner of the A4 last month.

Only being a new audi owner (TT) this may be wrong. I am sure that I read in the owners manual that you can reprogramme the keys by doing some strange door lock thingy. Not sure if this is the same for the RS6 (probably not) but have a look anyway.
