Dear All,

Recently bought a lovely Oak Green 3 dr GTI 16V "big bumper".

The car is in good condition and completely original. I am looking at bringing it back to 100% condition so that I have a mint true classic.

Does anyone have any advise as to where is a good place to buy interior and exterior parts from? Mechanically a VW specialist will be looking after it, but I want an original grill and lights, original gear knob and gaiter and anything else that it should have had like the BBS centre caps.

Could also be fun to take it to a rolling road and make sure it still has 139hp.

Any advise welcome!

Thanks
Rob

Ebay?

Or GSF? Don't know of they have interior parts.

You could try the classified sections in the Clubgti website or Edition 38 website.

This might interest you.

A man after my own heart!

I am doing exactly the same thing at the moment too.

GSF are great for mechanicals and a lot of it is OEM stuff. (Do check though, as some of it isn't)

I have bought a gear lever gaiter off ebay (a leather one) for £9 and was happy with it.

You can buy the BBS centre caps for £30ish a set from GPC in luton. They advertise on ebay too.

www.vagparts.com have all genuine parts at lower than dealer prices for the hard to find items. (Speak to Martyn, he is the proprietor, they can be slow on email so phoning can help...)

Where are the pics, it sounds lovely!

Cheers,

Steve.

Oddly enough, Volkswagen themselves aren't as pricey as you might think on a lot of items.

Be careful with pattern parts as they often prove to be a false economy. Especially GSF's cheap 'VTECH' wheel bearings. They last about a month. Ask yourself why these rubbish far eastern bearings are £8 each when VW's proper SKF bearing kits are £20 each. If you want that GTI to remain a happy bunny, spare no expense. You'll thank yourself for it in the long run, even if your wallet doesn't.

You're quite lucky, VW still hold vast stocks of MK2 parts but some interior bits and peices are starting to become obsolete. Ebay is your friend for obscure stuff.

139hp - If run on Super Unleaded, you can expect the full compliment of ponies, maybe more. One of my old Valvers kicked out 148hp on Stealth's rolling road and it was completely standard. Another valver had was a pig and felt flat as a fart, which the 125hp dyno run confirmed. You get good ones and you get bad ones.

As it's an old car, your first port of call should be the chassis. Replace tired dampers and rubber bushings, in particular the rear axle ones and bin the useless rear wishbone bushes and fit some sturdier Vibratechnics ones, which won't affect ride quality.

Thanks for all of the good advice.

Its booked in to an Audi main dealer for a 2 week period, as a friend works there and there are couple of techs who used to work for VW who are keen to have a play and earn a bit of cash!

They are going to go through the car and give me a list of what needs doing, which will either be prioritised or hopefully all done at once, as it appears to be a clean car.

Regards,
Rob
