Hi All,

My Golf's (94 L) steering is misbehaving a bit a moment. The steering feels very heavy when turning right (Not all the time though) but ok turning left. Saying that it doesn't do it all the time!

Could the power steering pump be on its way out?

Tyre pressures seem ok and are the same in all 4 corners. I have slightly more wear on the outer edge of the NSF tyre though and a slight pull to the left under braking - Tracking?

The car has nearly 136k miles on the clock so I guess a few bits and bobs are getting tired.

More likely to be a fault within the rack if its only heavy in one direction.
Check the ps belt tension, and also the fluid levels. Any leaks present?
If all ok there id suspect the rack.

Bet thats going to set me back a few quid then!

Will it just give up at some point or will it just get worse over time?

Any ideas on how many hours work it is or can it be changed DIY?

You may be able to get it reconditioned cheaper than a new one.
However, it may not be as expensive as you think for a new rack, shop around is my advice.
If its heavier in one direction it indicates that full assistance isnt being applied in that direction.
Likely to be a faulty seal or other internal part thats not doing what it should.
As before though, check the fluid levels and belt first, dosent cost you anything for that.

Yep, it's the rack itself causing that - assuming both dampers are OK. A weak damper on the one side can cause similar symptoms. It's usually the nearside front that goes first as that is where 90% of the bumps are.

Does your Golf have 5 stud wheels? If so it has the 'plus' running gear and the ZF steering rack costs a fortune from VW, about £550 exchange. If it's 4 stud, it might have the older rack which isn't so expensive.

Try ebay as there is a chap on there that sells ex VW old stock. I got a brand new ZF rack for £100 from him, which wasn't refurbed. VW Part numbers denoted with an X indictate it's refurbed, which is what you'll get from the dealer, but the ebay ones are factory new.

Be wary of really cheap refurbs. They receive nothing more than a lick of black paint and new seals. A decent refurb will include a new pinion and rack.

Its the 4 stud hub on it, i changed the shocks about 2 years ago so unless one of them is failed I think its the rack. I'm going to change the oil later so i'll inspect the shocks while i'm at it. The scary thing is that the car is only probably worth £500 so effectively if it needs £500 worth of work i'd be better off flogging it off cheap and getting something else (sooner than planned!)

Sorry meant to ask earlier - Any idea on the amount of labour involved to change the rack?
