took my A6 99 4.2 quattro sport into audi to see what th eclonking noise thats coming from the centre/offside front is.. its just had all the front steering arms replaced, they said that they could get the noise on a test drive_ definite clunking noise, more niticible going slightly downhill, on an uneven surface at low speed....or over a speed bum at an angle... but when they got back into the work shop couldnt find anythng loose..

they have there fore run out of suggestions, other that 'it might be the steering rack'

does this sound plausable? dont want to get that repalced and find out its still doing the same thing..

they have checked all the shocks, springs, engine mounts etc and no closer to the mystery clonk...

I wouldn't let the garage spend any more of your time trying to diagnose it. I'd ignore it, or get someone else to drive while you stick your head out of the window.

Take it somewhere else. I had a similar answer from an audi specialist about a knocking on my S4. Took it to my regular mechanic and he replaced both lower arms as the ball joints were shot.

yes, taking it to a specialist next week..

its had to go back into audi three times for them to try to get the trackig straight!!!

its such an obvious knocking/clonking noise i am seriously surprised thay cannot recreate it in the workshop.....

Depends how they look for it. The lot that couldn't find mine only have 4 post ramp lifts and hence the car is still on its wheels. The guy that found the problem has only 2 post lifts hence the wheels were bearing no weight and suspension parts were free to move and expose the problem.

good point...i'll ask them in the audi garage on monday which they use...

to be honest if they cant find the cause of a noise that obvious they must have trouble finding their way home..

but you have to assume a main dealer knows what the yare doing??
