A6 Avant service - rear brake pads already?
Discussion
Just got my 54-plate A6 avant 1.9tdi back from a main dealer at the first service. I'm informed that the rear brake pads are 95% gone and need replacing at £180 - already!
It's done 20k relativelty gentle mway miles from new.
Now for the last 10 years all my high-milers have been run as company cars - this is my first 'owned' car.
Is this normal? I thought fronts took all the strain and went long before the rears?
Have I been had over by a stealer? Must there be a fault with the car? Is this just normal? Am I just a bit of a tight-wad...???

Main dealer ... telling you pads need doing ... never hear that do we?
I'd get the car back and have a look at the friction material for yourself. They certainly don't cost that much to do and a good indie.
My A6 did 100k on its first pads and discs at the rear. Changed them last year.

Well, had it out with the Service Manager and nope - he will not move on price.
Say that they may have been sticking or put it down to my driving style (it's a 1.9tdi for gods sake!).
I insisted that I kept the pads and they do look completely shot and in need of replacement. Tell me a main dealer wouldn't fob me off with another car's pads, please! I feel completely mugged. Thank you, Audi.
And that, at a grand total of £575 was a monir service. What more have I got to look forward to?
Good point about and indie, but I thought that with the car being only 18 months old I'd get the right stamps to improvr the value come sell-on time - which may now be even sooner than planned...

Hi, I've got an A4 1.9TDi and I need to change pads once every 12 months. Do about 45K each year and drive it hard everywhere.
3 types of front calliper on A4 and A6, the type I have is the one that needs the most expensive pads at £45 purchased from dealer (genuine part). As mine go so often I change them myself, Max 15 minutes per side including taking the wheel off and back on, they are that easy!
Rears, same calliper for all I am told. £21 for pads from dealer. Takes a bit longer if you haven't got the tool to whinde the piston back, I use a large long nose pliers fitted into the slots (don't grip piston surface with them).
I would never pay £185 for pad replacement, even if it was front and rear.
