Hi
I have just been to see a 2000V audi a3 1.8 turbo sports. Its got full SH and done 89k. I couldnt see anywhere in the SH book that the cambelt has been changed..I have no idea about these engines but from the SH book it looked like they need to be changed at 115k, but this sounds far too much..anyway, the trader said he would get it done at his local garage tomorrow- does this sound OK- or does it need to be by an audi dealer/specialist?
any advice appreciated!
thanks

Specialist can do it. Many of these cars lunch the tensioner or water pump before 80k. You should get the cambelt, tensioner and especially the water pump changed as a condition of sale.

If you think I'm exaggerating go to www.tt-forum.co.uk and search for cambelt on there. Regular failures. it might be that the 'normal' 1.8T lasts longer due to less stress than an S3/TT but I wouldn't risk it.

£500ish.

Original service interval was 120K on these engines but numerous failures ahs changed the recommendation. Most go for 60-80k miles. Got my Golf 1.8T done at 85k miles, cost around 300 quid.

That was for cambelt, tensioner, waterpump ( These are prone to failure as the plastic impeller spins on the spindle ) and idler pulley.

Cheers guys. He reckoned his mechanic would do it for £100 but this price has got to be belt only!

Take a look at www.vag20v.net and do a search or two.
There's a few threads on things that go wrong, and cam belt replacements. MAKE SURE they do the water pump, cos if it fails the day after you have the timing belt done, it's all gotta come off and you'll have to pay twice!! Unless you DIY it! You know it's all done properly then, and it's not as bad as you might think. I did mine, and the only other thing I'd ever done to a car was Oil and filter change.

Get it done if it's not been, I've heard a number of stories of them breaking before 80k!
