Youll only need a new ecu, crash sensors and pretensioners if the sytem has been activated- theyre meant to self destruct during operation in a shunt.
Id check to make certain that the system has indeed been activated first before having anything replaced, by going to another dealer (or independent) and having them diagnose it first.
It could just be something silly like an intermittant connection on one of the airbags, pretensioners or ecu.

Airbag light came on on the wifes A3 - 18 months old - under warranty they cleaned the sensor and off I went - well not that simple as the dealer I went too was pretty poor with it's customer care. In fact they could possibly charge you for a new ECU etc and then just clean the sensor?
Ask them what the airbag fault codes were.
The airbag light often comes on when the seat is moved forward or back. The multi pin plug (for the side airbags) under the seat causes probs.
Any faults registered in the airbag system will remain untill the fault code is cleared. It will not reset if the batery is disconected.
