Hi all, got a mk4 fairly recently, absolutely love it! MK5 must be incredible.

Couple of questions....

Does the comp tell you when the service is due by flashing or otherwise? Because its very low mileage there is little evidence of servicing (15K miles) between owners. The guy I bought it from was 2nd owner and bought from vw stealer. He only did 7k miles, bought it with 6. The manual states 20k mileage intervals but should I be tempted to throw it in sooner for a check up?

Tyres have a couple of K left, are michelin pilots the best when renewing? Ive never used them previously, always pirelli pzeros which wear far too quickly IMO!

thanks , Kristian

service intervals are 10k not 20, the computer will tell you when you are close to a service, but can be user reset , so if in doubt, suggest you get it serviced and start from a known point.

I've recently bought a MK4 R32.

If your car is set to variable servicing (which it would be from the factory unless the previous owner changed it to fixed servicing - I have on mine) then the first service could well not come around until up to 20K miles. Variable servicing works by monitoring things like oil quality, number of cold starts, how long journeys last etc.

Fixed will obviously be an oil change every 10K with extra bits being done every 20K.

I changed mine to fixed as I would never leave the same oil in a car for up to 20K miles. Don't forget to get the Haldex oil and probably filter changed at 20K miles as well.

The information display will let you know when a service is due with a mileage count down, whether it is on variable or fixed.

I've just changed to Goodyear F1 GSD3's from the standard Michelins and to me, I much prefer the feel of the Goodyears and they also grip much better in the dry and wet. They were also cheaper.
