Hello Audi folk,

We are looking at getting a new (used)car, and the RS6 (saloon) has floated into view. I enjoyed the posts on RobsterRS6's thread about his new Avant - congratulations, sounds to be a great car. Any hints, tips, considerations to bear in mind? Other contenders have included an M5, but nothing has actually been test driven yet. Any thoughts appreciated.

No considerations to bear in mind, just buy one if it fits your criteria.

I've owned my RS6 saloon since Nov '04 (9k miles when bought, now 23k) and nothing's gone wrong except parking sensors have failed a couple of times. Though a common problem had reared it's head in leaking dampers (in my case, the front) and they are being replaced next week under warranty.

Timing belt should be changed every about 3yrs/40k and that can cost about £500 or more (all the dealers seem to charge differently, depends partly on their labour rate).

Engine is great and auto gearbox smooth with the paddle changes giving added control, when you want it. Brakes are great too but get any used cars checked here as it's a heavy, fast car.

Many will still be under warranty and they can be extended for, IIRC, £1500. A lot really and I still can't make up my mind whether to extend mine in Oct this year as car has been so reliable. A few years of extending warranty and that could be £4500 down the drain.

I may even be selling mine for a 996TT but keep changing my mind about it! I like the discreteness with practicality of the RS6 and still enjoy every drive in it. Even going slow, it feels special.

Any questions, fire away.........You may also want to visit www.rs246.com for best RS6 owners forum.
