If you had (or even if you do have) a Tornado Red URQ, and it's standard wheels were in a sorry state, what would you do??

a) Refurb them in White or silver

b) Buy new ones (suggest style & size)

The reason I ask is a friend of mine is in this position, and every wheel he emails to me, IMO doesn't suit the shape of the car, and I cant think of anything that does.

Cheers all,

Ed.

re-ferb them in the correct Zermatt silver.
ur quattros look better when on standard wheels.

I have tried many different types, the only other that suited was the BBS RS 8x15 especially on the black and grey colour cars.

Ditto.

Refurb the originals as they were meant to be, or possibly BBS's but not too big!

And quite difficult to find anyhing else to fit anyway. Why's he want to replace them? The Ronals are cool.

So we're all agreed then, good.

I've looked into different wheels, but the only ones I found that would look any good aren't available in the quattro PCD. Though on the bright side it's saved me a few hundred quid.

Slightly controversial, but if I had a red one I'd want the wheels to be refurbed in white. Sports always looked superb on white wheels, after all.

Revolution RFX five spoke alloys are still avialable in 8x15 for that 80's look, a bit like the optional Fuch alloys for the early WR. Or if you can find a set of 9x15 ronals from a Sport quattro... very cool!

I would not bother with any of the modern alloys it would just look wrong.

The only good reasons for not having the Ronals, IMO, is if you really need bigger brakes, or if you live in an area with rough roads and potholes. Ronals can go out of shape quite easily.

They look the mutts on those le mans style split rims, the ones with the vents in, I'll dig up a picture - no I won't as I can't find one....

My Pearl White MB had factory colour coded white Ronals and that looked nice:

Whenever I see a UR with aftermarket wheels I think they just dont look right.
I think all are agreed on refurb.
I was drooling over a Tornado Red Sport Quattro a few weeks ago and that had white Ronals also. Looked fantastic.

So its the Stock rims in white or silver then

I personally think in white tbh, but then this is the sort of thing he is thinking of

Not a bad looking wheel, but it just doesn't suit it.

Cheers for the response guys.

Interesting points of view there.

I've got a Mars Red Ur with white Ronals and was considering switching to silver to make it look more original, however may now stick as is.

For the record, what's the correct size for an 83 model and how did wheel sizes change through the years? (also were there any bodywork modifcations or will all sizes fit all models?)

The correct size for an '83 is 6" rims (Ronal) or 7" (Fuchs). The change to 8" rims came in about 1984 IIRC. The arches are the same, but should be rolled with the wider wheels in the earlier cars. Also the rear plastic lower bumper surround needs to have it's bottom skirts pushed outwards towards teh bottom with "hockey sticks".

Forgot about the Fuchs alloys. You do still see a few earlier cars on those and they look OK. IMHO the stance of the car looks just right on the 8 inch deep Ronals .

Im getting all sentimental for mine again now......
