Am thinking of making the switch to cash in a bit and gain practicallity - is it recomended or will the regrets be too much?

The Rado V6 is an excellent motor:

1. Its quick
2. Practicle
3. Fairly rare / unusual
4. Cheap to service/work on
5. Insurance is expensive
6. Can be thristy if you drive hard all the time.

All in all, a great car for the money. Don't worry about the millage, as nearly all of them will be 90-130+K ! As long as they have been cared for you'll be fine.

It is no Elise though, but you'll have plenty of fun from the happy reving v6 190bhp 6 pot !

Bit nose heavy but fitting decent suspension will help, great noise from the engine, youngest will be N reg so over 10 years old. Good on mway and rear seats are not that bad even for adults.

Excellent car.

There are a few for sale in Autotrader, one for £16k! A one owner model with just 24k on the clock.

Good ones with less than 100k are normally £6k - £8.5k.

Like any car it depends on what your requirements for a car actually are, but if you want a fast, reliable, smart, comfortable car that seats 4 people with a modest amount of luggage then you could do a lot worse that a Corrado VR6.

Plus they're getting rare now. You'll stand out in a Corrado, driving (comparitively) in a world full of Lotus Elises

I haven't owned an elise, but I have owned VR6 Corrado's, I love them, but dont be fooled into thinking they are cheap to run. Many of them are now getting to the age that they need a fair bit of work doing to them-eg, front wings (which seem to go) of geniune vw origin cost 200 plus, and things like calipers and carriers are also expensive, infact all those bits that you are going to need to replace are costly! It has been cheaper to pay payments and run an r32 for a year than it was to run and service my Vr6 for the year before!

But don't let me put you off as I would always have another!

I would spend as much as you can and I would also consider a good standard none "Storm" as well as there is absolutly no difference mechanicaly, and a high spec Vr6 will come with leather and AC and the original Speedline alloys!

Happy hunting
Cheers
Leon.

Leonski is quite right - the Storm was a run-out "parts bin special" that basically just added a load of optional extras as standard and some fancy alloys.

If you were to go for a specced-up late-model VR6 like mine (which, finally, is NOT for sale ) then you'll get leather heated seats anyway without paying the extra for the halo-effect "Storm" badge.

The car is no Elise - they are totally different cars - but they are immense fun to drive. If you could afford it then an Elise and a Corrado VR6 would be quite viable (although I acknowledge that you can't afford to do that based on what you originally posted)

Insurance is expensive, but drops to extremely reasonable levels when you're a late-30's old fart like me and the car isn't modified much (ie. £400-odd) but I have seen £800-odd in the past when both the car and I were younger.

The car isn't as thirsty as you'd think. Round town expect low-to-mid 20's, but with a light right foot and motorway miles, expect high 30's if not low 40's.

They really are great cars, but they will also be a big culture shock compared to an Elise and requires a totally different driving style.

As others have said, you cannot compare an Elise to a Corrado, but then you no doubt know that already. The Corrado handles remarkably well, but it has nowhere near as flexible or responsive as the Elise. This could prove frustrating for you.

It is a real head turner as they are something of a rarity (though Nottingham is a Corrado mecca). There won't be real gains in terms of petrol savings by making the switch, but you will reap real rewards in terms of extra luggage space and will be able to ferry four adults around in relative comfort (that is the bottom of my list of priorities ). Insurance costs will depend on modifications, as well as your age. I'm mid thirties, an IAM member, have maximum no claims and no convictions and pay about £700. My post code has much to do with this though.

I would agree with others who have said don't focus on a Storm. These are way over priced for the little extras and fairly hard to come by. Keep your sights set on a good, well maintained, standard VR6 model. You will see quite large repair bills if anything major goes and some parts are quite hard to come by.

If I had the money, I'd get an Elise as they are so much fun. Shame as otherwise we could have done a swap

Put it this way - I can keep up with an Elise in real-world road driving, but an Elise cannot do this:

So you finally bought the roof bars then Jon. I'm still trying to win an auction on ebay for mine! (4 unsuccessful campaigns so far!)

Don't buy the Short Roof Adaptor (477) - you don't need it!

You only need the bars (761), the foot pack (950), and the elusive fitting kit (094).

761 and 950 are easy to pick up on eBay and I would strongly advise buying 094 new from whoever has stock ASAP as Thule have discontinued it.
