I wouldn't have thought it was anything major, all the other VAG cars have the 180bhp 1.8T so I s'pose it made sense for the Golf to be 180, you can't really have the Skoda VRS being quicker than the GTi can you
And as the 180bhp upgrade for the 150bhp 1.8T Golf is a simple ecu re-map costing about £500 I bet thats all Volkswagen did.
But I bet someone here...........

........will give a much more detailed and correct answer

Apparently some of the later 150HP cars have the KO3S as well I think. Either way the KO3/KO3S can be remapped to over 200BHP quite easily. www.goapr.com do a chip, www.revotechnik.com do one, www.mtm-online.de or www.oettinger.com do them all as well.
The difference between the KO3 and KO3S is in the turbine wheel from memory. Its pretty much maxed out at 215BHP. A KO4 which I presume was used on the 225BHP TT Quattro is a good upgrade, but will require a suitable chip.

later 180bhp cars run ko3s turbos and a 6 speed box aswell as a different engine management progaramme although you could still buy the 150bhp 5 speed with k03 turbo the difference in the turbos as previously mentioned is the turbine size and the speed in which it spins ko3s being the faster spinning therefore less lag but with either engine the revo remap is highly recommended as it makes the car leon cupra r fast
