I the proud owner of a great black Mk1 Golf GTi with a G60 turbo charged engine.

However it has a very loud dump valve on it which I find very embrassing. I'm not very mechanically minded and am aware that the dump valve serves a purpose.

On a lot of the WRC Rally cars the turbo's make a 'chattering' noise rather than the dump valve 'wosh'.

Does anyonme know what I can do to change this?

Replace the present version with a recirculating piston type.

Itll virtually eliminate any dump valve noise that way.

do you know if these are expensive? Would it be a specialist product or off the shelf?

Balls to that, thats for the burbary baseball cap no clue crew, I've had chav chuff valves on my turbos & ripped 'em right off & put recirc valves back on. With re-mapped cars & higher boost pressure they wooosh more loudly than stock, but not in such a chav manner.

I agree, I would prefer to be more understated rather then letting everyone know the car has been modified, let them have a nice surprise at the lights!! Want to try and keep the car as normal looking / sounding as possible. Let the chavs do the shouting!
