Hi all,

Having just read about a great time by an S4 at last weekends VMax, it did make me wonder just how fast these cars are. By S4 I mean the first model, ones at around S/T reg.

Presumably they are limited to 155mph as standard, and do 0-60 in 6 seconds-ish (maybe just under), but can the limited be removed to good effect easily? Also what kinds of STABLE modifications can be made to an S4?

Cheers.

The early S4's are very modable. From basic chipping to upgraded turbos, etc. The guys at www.rs246.com are the best source of info on these cars.

That's the second model, but never mind. It'll tune to over 300bhp reliably and fairly cheaply.

300 bhp is just a remap for £500 from a 2.7Bi Turbo - about 5.6 to 60 bog std (265Bhp) ...310-320bhp with exhaust + map and will full cats/downpipes maybe 340Bhp for about £2.7K ..its basically a detuned + smaller turbo RS4 380bhp lump

they are quick cars - had one myself...imgagine a 300bhp discreet Scooby with more room in the back and more toys/better interior and you are nearly there .......

I thought the second generation S4s had a reputation for blowing their turbos if chipped up?

I can tell you...! :-)

VERY VERY VERY FAST! I know, cos I have one. Its got 392 bhp and its been well off the clock and still accelerating, so over 170 mph.

0 -62 is about just over 5 seconds, although better when higher up the range.

Apparently a supercharger will take it to 480 bhp, but that would cost £12k.

Sorry that's the new S4, 4.2 V8

Not so sure about the older ones, but as its got a turbo, you can really modify them!

Indeed. Reading that time was the very reason I posted this question. In fact I've actually been speaking to Dave via email to get a brief idea of what's been done. Seems a lovely car.

Shows how much I know doesn't it? Out of interest when did the first models come out then? I think the oldest S4 I've ever seen was S-reg. Granted they're the sort of car you don't always notice.

The first S4 to which Agent 006 refers was the 100 S4, launched in 1992, and rebadged in about 1995 as the first S6 when the A4-based S4 (the one you're talking about) came along.

Yep, the S4 name is a bit misleading as it was what became the S6. The equivalent of the A4 at the time was the 80, the fast versions of which were the S2 and the RS2.

My S4 (RIP)

Was just being pedantic really

Morning all,

Switch off now if details bore you

The Silver S4 from VMAX is mine, the B5 bodyshape i.e. original A4 design.

The early ones came out around 97-98 and there are facelifited ones from mid 99 onwards.

The standard car is 265bhp and 300ft lbs torque from a 2.7 twin turbo V6. Really nice sleeper of a car, 0-60 in 5.7 and I guess 165 mph. I bought it because it was fast and would not get noticed too much.

As people have said above, a remap and a few pressure pipe improvements will see 320bhp and 350 ft lbs torque, so a big improvement for £ 700 ish.

After that there is loads you can do, let me know if you want more details and I'll post them.

DaveT, just one quick question - exactly how scary was it at 173?

LOL, it was fine, felt rock solid and steering was fine.

I have uprated coilover suspension and ARB's though. The brakes are one of the big issues on S4's, most people uprate them because they pedal feel is crap and they fade pretty early.

David, I was hoping you would post when I saw the title ......as to the question about now scary was it at such speed?

I own a totally standard car, as a passenger Davids car is just a bit more of everything....but there was no drama,,either at that speed, slowing or once at rest....very impressive and tremendous value for such performance.

its my old car. (not me selling it) its about 130,000 miles i think but its worth saying that the only thing on it thats done 130k is the body. engine/box/brakes/suspension/wheels you name it probably have less than 30k on. i spent a fortune making it FAST, bullet proof reliable and handle and stop properly at AmD. its an epic stealth car. 0-130mph neck and neck with my freinds murcialago. if i had another garage i'd buy it back. (by the way at that price its a fraction of the cost of the mods alone!!!)

Thanks for posting. I quite understand what you are saying about the cost of the mods and the mileage on them.
