A4 TDI 130 bhp quattro

A friend of mine has recently got him self a used (3 year old i think) A4 TDI. even though the car is in good condition (70K on the clock), he has a few questions about the car. I'm hoping the Audi owners on here can help him out.

1) idle seems alittle high at 'just' under 1000rpm. is that right?
2) when shifting from 3rd to 4th it sometimes makes a griding noise i think it occurs more often if rushed. any ideas?

i'm quite impressed with the materials inside the car, the thing i didn't like was amount of noise it makes on startup! otherwise a very fine car!
