Number two could be a wire that has sheared - my wiring in the door is a bit dodgy as over time the cables have snapped due to the bending of cables by opening doors over time.

Number one? Maybe a sticky brake caliper? If it is, replace it with a MK3 one which is less prone to sticking (although mine do at times).

1. From memory, could be: wheel bearing or CV joint. Does it make the noise when going straight ahead? Does it get worse / better when turning? Could also be something rubbing somewhere?

2. Windows - the doors are "wet" with the lovely plastic membranes to put back - the connectors inside corrode, so I'd stick a meter on it.

Doorcards are a bit of a pain. My technique was:

1. Undo all the screws on the side of the doors and the bolt through the door handle / mirror control knob (unless you have electric ones).

2. Start at the bottom and tease the clips and move up, with hands around the side.

The key thing is not to pull it from one end or the other, as you bend the top section and the crease shows (queue new door card).

You may find the membrane liner has broken down / torn and you need to make it good or replace otherwise you'll get wet doors etc.

TBH - I'm not sure what the "zizzing" could be - If you've had the CV's done, and you are sure it's coming from the front, then it might be bearings, or something that is dragging on the drivetrain? Is something dragging / scraping on the back of on the discs (in between the air scoop / heat shield thingys?).

BTW - where about's in deadfordshire are you? My parents still live in Turvey.

Yeah, probably a wheel bearing on a MK2, they're 'only' good for 100,000 miles.

Make sure the anti squeal pad hasn't slipped out from behind the pad, mine did that. Took me ages to figure out what it was!

Door cards are a snap to change on a MK2 Golf, Reseal with gaffa tape (better than new).

I've got a few spare electric window switches if you want one. PM me.
