Ive been drawn towards this inline mod box for my A6 1.9 130 sport.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl

It seems from the feedback its a genuine item. The extra power sounds ok, but im more tempted by the extra mpg that goes with it.

Any opinions on it being a con or a genuine improvement, and if improvement, is it bad for the engine?

In terms of bhp/£ its good value, but TBH I would stick with the better known VAG tuners AmD, Revo, APR, MTM, MRC, Custom code etc, From experience (i have the AmD custom one click on a TT) it pays to go to these type of tuner

Steer Clear IMO

Im worried thats the con, its too cheap to worry if it doesnt work. If you had paid £100+ you would moan.

Do you have a web link for those you listed?

These just work by lying about the exhaust temperature, as far as I know. Which means everything's running a bit hotter. Not sure what the original tolerances are, and how much this would affect them.

I've been tempted by that exact same mod for the last couple of weeks myself, but with 90,000 on the clock and it supposedly being my "reliable as reliable gets" car for long trips/days I can't afford Optimax for the mostly-Ford thing, I'm a bit apprehensive about shortening the engine's life. OK, so the engine should be good for 200k+, but the principle and the reality may well be different if I start tuning the car!

Don't waste your money on rubbish like this.

Up to 25 bhp extra and improved MPG? Yeah right

Entirely possible with a decent re-map and suitable driving style...

But that'll cost you £500 at least. Forget this EBay sh1te.

The power hike's quite possible (at the top end... but it's mid range torque that matters). The economy I'm not so convinced about!

Im happy to be convinced its rubbish if you can give me a reason. Its true on bikes, you can chip them and they get more power and more mpg, mainly as you can accelerate at the same speeds without as much throttle input, or they just change the tune to burn more efficiently until more throttle switches the tune to a power config.
-- and bike tunes start at £25...

Cant see why the same can't apply to cars?

actually, we shall soon know! A pal has ordered one under the I don't care "I'll try it anyway" rule for his Golf Tdi. Will let you know how he gets on.

It'll work. And be impressive. Am quite sure of that.

But, given that the engine'll now be getting false readings, you won't know how close to/how far over manufacturing tolerances you are. I.e. it could return 100,000 trouble free miles or more. Or it could result in issues a hell of a lot sooner...

Its arrived and plugged in, unsuprisingly it attaches to the temperature sendor, so it looks like the old think its cold trick.

The pickup has more punch, and instead of running out of power at 3500rpm, it keeps going to the redline, so thats useful.

The mpg was up on todays 20 mile run too, not scientific I know, but probably 15 mpg more than expected.

There is a slight hunt on idle too.
The golf has 117,000 on the clock anyway (X plate) so the owner isnt too fussed about wear! Im debating about trying it on my 1 year old A6....
