Audi revs engines for A6 and A8

FSI brings more power and miles to the gallon

Four Audi A6 and A8 models reap the performance and economy benefits of the latest Audi V8 engine with advanced FSI direct petrol injection technology from this week.

Debuted in the Q7 quattro SUV and A6 allroad quattro, the new 345bhp 4.2-litre FSI engine replaces the 4.2-litre, 330bhp unit that has powered A6 and A8 models since launch. Peak torque is 324lb-ft from 3,500rpm, enabling A6 4.2 FSI quattro models to accelerate from rest to 62mph in 5.9 seconds, A8 4.2 FSI quattros to go the distance in 6.1 seconds and all versions to reach a governed top speed of 155mph.

The extremely precisely metered fuel injection made possible by the FSI system not only maximises performance in these new models, but also ensures that they return fuel economy figures that exceed expectations for high-output V8-powered luxury cars. The A6 4.2 FSI quattro can cover up to 26.1mpg, and its A8 counterpart up to 23.9mpg.

Despite being more powerful and quicker off the mark than its predecessor, the new A6 4.2 FSI quattro nevertheless has the potential to cover an additional 39 miles on each tank of fuel, and its A8 counterpart an additional 47 miles.

FSI lean-burn technology makes these benefits possible through outstandingly efficient distribution of fuel directly into the cylinders via a high-pressure common rail injection system. It first proved its worth in the R8 sports cars, which won 62 of the 79 races it has contested so far, including 5 victories in the Le Mans 24-hour marathon race. It now boosts efficiency in A3, A4, A6 and A6 allroad quattro, A8 and new TT models.

Priced from £44,475, the new A6 4.2 FSI quattro Saloon and Avant variants are available to order now, as are the standard and long wheel base A8 4.2 FSI quattros, priced from £58,305 OTR. Deliveries of all models to UK customers are due to commence in July.

Seems a lot of money for an Audi A8.

and it only does 23.9mpg, which at nearly £1/litre... well you work it out. Why not buy the V8 diesel version - still got loadsa power and will be much cheaper to fuel. It's not like it's a sports car is it.

What about the 4.2l V8 they use in the RS4? That chucks out around 420bhp! Why not just use that??

But I easily achieve 28mpg average from an all-steel 1999 V8 Jag and can coax it well into the 30s.
