Hi All,

Still not completely satisfied that all is ok with the Golf, Numbnuts gave all the essential bits a once over and said that nothing is going to drop off (although bushes and dampers are going south), however, I still feel that the 'loose' feeling in the steering is not right.

i.e. if I turn right, and then turn left, the steering takes a while to 'pick up' - like about 1/4 turn to respond, and then when I straighten up the steering wheel doesn't strighten until a bump is hit for example.

Additionally I've just done a 50 mile motorway journery (lots of on/off accelerator stuff) and am noticing a pronounced vibration when I lift off the accelerator - so much so the steering wheel shakes if I take my hands off it. Prod the accelerator and it stops, lift off and it comes back...

Any ideas people? the car is on 117.5k miles now and original everything with regard the steering and suspension.

It feels like the front of the car is going to fall off!!!

Help!

Cheers

Neil

I'd suspect play in the front suspension. The vague steering in particular sounds similar to a problem I had that turned out to be a top ball joint that had seized and subsequently sheared.

Hi Neil, a combination of all the joints being worn would cause the vague steering but your vibration and wheel shake is probably a CV joint. Before you go to the expence of a new one, repack and wrap the one's that are on. The problem you've got, is normally because they are dry. John

Cheers chaps (esp John - hello again  ),

Agent006 has a mechanic who is especially hot on these things (Motoya's ex Front suspension expert or something) and I'm gonna book it in for a once over.

Its all since VMax were its gone all wooly, and although it still grips I have to drive with a certain 'expectation' of its handling - I'm desperate to get it back to what it once was.

I'm going to:

1. Repack CV joints
2. Replace Ball joints (I've heard its a common thing on older cars)
3. Sort the bushes
4. Get decent shocks
5. Continue to terrorise everything

Can anyone post any links to help me with diagnosing and maintaining these parts? I'm happy to give it a go, but I need a gentle hand in showing me what to do

Cheers

Hmm :scrathchin: seems from a bit of reading and investigation that it could well be that a combination of the Wishbone bushes and the Balljoint going south could be the cause of the issue.

It seems (over on Club GTI) that many people have had a clean bill of health when it comes to suspension problems, yet when replacing the wishbone bushes (or the whole wishbone in some case) and replacing the balljoint solves all manner of problems.

The bushes are visibly screwed, and I think from other peoples descriptions of their issues that this may well be what is wrong with mine.

Off to VW then for me for parts.

Another question though, is it worth getting Poly bushes for the wishbone, or getting standard ones?

Cheers

Neil
