Question about the mk2 g60, is it correct that these were only made LHD? Also what if any is the difference between the GTI 8v engine and the G60 engine other than the supercharger and intercooler? Is it possible to use a G60 on an engine out of a gti 8v without too much hassle?

I think the G60 had a lower compression ration than the 8v gti lumps at 8.8:1 instead of the gti's 10.0:1.
Also the g60 has oil spray jets to cool the pistons.

You can do most anything with anything if you have either the time, money, ability or inclination!

Yes the G60 Golfs were all LHD, all 5000 of them. Here's a link to a page you might find useful.

Yep all LHD, something to do with the supercharger not being able to fit when the steering wheel was on the proper side as I recall.

Pick of the charged Veedubs was the G60 limited. Looks like a 5 door small bumper GTI with a weird grille.

Stealth looks hide a supercharged 16v and 4x4

So you cant convert the standard 8v to a g60 without altering internal engine components and adding an oil spray which could b tricky shame as the superchargers arent much to buy to add to a reasonable car to end up with something pretty fast. How much do the limited 4x4 ones sell for now?

You could do a part conversion whereby you change the pistons on the 8v gti (PB coded engines) to take the cr from 10.1 to 8.8 and then run the g60 ecu(8v) and injection components along with the supercharger.
No reasons why thatd not work.

You can use MB code quattro pistons (iirc) to give you the correct cr and theyre up to the job cos they get used in a turbo anyway.

Slight variation is to keep the 10.1 cr and use a good intercooler/chargecooler and/or run less boost.
Engine would be just as good off bost then and with the same fuel efficiency.

I thought that the oil spray onto the pistons would be required though as the G60 runs really hot unless you spend on an expensive intercooler? Do any of these G60 engines ever come up for sale?

Given that the G60 was used in the Golf G60, the Rallye, the Corrado and the Passat (or was that in the US only?) and that people in Corrado land are now doing 20V turbo conversions, then you should be able to find one. Try a few specialist breakers like Sanburn in Coventry.

Anything is possible but it would cost more than the sum of all the parts and not forgeting the time....

I also thought the G60 had a slightly small cc ?

I'm not sure on the cost, a good, proper Golf G60 is 4k.

A good 8v is a grand.

A good G60 lump is a grand.

500 quid of bits

600 quid charger rebuild....

Depends if RHD is that important to you I guess.

Does it have to be charged? Really nice 16v is 2k, 500 quid on a 2 litre bottom end and you've got 160BHP that'll do 200k between rebuilds. A G-lader needs 20k rebuilds at 500+ quid a pop (and if it does let go they're a grand new).

hi, i was gonna put a G60 in my mk2 8valve but after lots of thought and chats with people decided to go for a 2 ltr bottom end, ported polished head with fast road cam and to give it kick when needed 75bhp of progressive nitros. should do the trick when comlete and will hopefully give me more power than a g60 for less money.
