My '98 A6 2.5 tdi is going in next week for a full brake overhaul, discs, pads , calipers stripped/replaced, fluid changed, alignment and tracking all done.

Any suggestions on what makes of discs and pads to put on, or just go for anything?

Also, what Dot level of fluid should go in it, just to try and improve the braking feel a little, cause its a big old bus to try and stop and the brakes are a little hard to judge.

Any other suggestions as to what else to check for/replace, much appreciated

I put the ATE discs from Eurospares on my 2.5 tdi A4,should be the same, although the standard ATE pads were not up to much.Just had no bite,so get some standard pads from Audi. They aren't much more than the ATE ones.I put EBC Greenstuff pads on and they are a bit better than the ATE's.Is there a need to strip and rebuild the calipers?.Maybe just new discs and pads and a fluid change will do the trick.Move the pistons in and out a few times to move them and then put the pads in.Rear disc pads are about a tenner and I have pagid ones,so do those too.You will need a piston wind back tool for the rears.

The rears are starting to seize on, and the front pads are wearing twice as fast on one side than the other, so suspect the sliders on the front calipers are in need of attention. To top it all off, the brake pad warning light is now on, and beeps everytime i get in the car.

I'm not doing it myself, though i probably should, just can't afford to break anything as its my daily drive, and also cause i can't get the front locking wheel nut off and theres not much life left in the locking nut, last thing i need is to shear a wheel nut.

Heard good things about the ATE stuff, advice much appreciated
