Hi folks
Our Golf has a problem with the rev counter.
Without warning the needle goes right round to maximum revs and will stay there even when the engine is switched off.
The car drives fine.
we can reset the problem by switching on the ignition and not starting the engine, the needle then slowly drifts back to rest at zero. When we start the engine it may not go wrong for hours and then without warning it does it again.
Any ideas please.

Thanks
Gary

Might be a dashpod problem. Lots of TTs have random dial action caused by this.

doesn't a coil pack breaking down also provide these symptoms?
a regular occurance with VAG motors IIRC

thought the coil pack was only for Petrol Engines...

AFAIK Diesels donot have a "Coil"... they use higher compression to ignite the fuel / air mixture.

sounds like dash or speedo electronics to me... can you not take it to a dealer and just ask them to diagnose the problem ?

Thanks everyone.
spoke to main dealer who says the instrument pod needs replacing. I'm off work for a week shortly which will allow me to remove the pod and check the connections, never know, might be lucky!
Cheers
