Trying to think of an interesting but sensible (if thats possible) replacement for my V plate 2.8 Quattro A6 Avant.

It must be an estate.

List is 530 Sport, V70 T5/R or another A6.

Me and the wife would both prefer and Audi, but the more normal engines seem slowish and thirsty (ie the 3.0 Quattro, or very, very slow). The 4wd would be nice as my commute is through the Peak District all year round.

Has anybody got an S6, any thoughts or opinions on it please? I'd probably be spending 15-20k.

Thanks

Tim

Looking at the spec of the 3.0 Quattro I was surprised how underpowered it is.

Picked up our S4 today.

I'd also been deliberating on S6s but we decided we didn't need the extra space.

Let me know how you get on with it.

PS. I took the badges off mine at the weekend. John

Hi.
We sell Audi performance cars amongst all the other slow ones. (www dot harperandhebson dot com)
We've just ordered our new demonstrator S6 Avant V10 quattro. It will be awesome when it arrives.
I was also amazed the first time I drove a 3.0 quattro petrol A4 and A6. It's soooo slow. Really a disappointment.
I have an Audi S4 Avant Bi-turbo quattro with mods myself. The newer V8 model is a finely honed precision tool. Much sharper.
Now, an S6 4.2 V8 on the other hand, is quite an involving and deceptively quick machine. You should try to locate one that has either the gearshift paddles on the rear of the steering wheel, or indeed the factory extra wheel with the multi-functions for audio and then the gearshift buttons are on the face of the wheel, a-la Porsche tiptronic-S.
In the right colour it's even a bit of a q-car. Quite stealthy.
A nice one, proper car, ooh say £20k ish.
Other examples are available for £10k plus, although you should be made aware that regular maintenance is likely on the older higher mileage (and therefore cheaper) cars.
Don't think too hard over S6 Avants - really a great car.
Incidentally my inside view is that saloons are a mistake to buy -they just aren't practical enough - part of the appeal of these S and RS Audis is the Avant part!
Happy hunting!
Andrew.

I agree that the Avants make the best buy. However, saloons offer more security if you're a laptop carrying IT monkey type person like me. Even our Audi TT had the rear window smashed and parcel shelf ripped out causing £2500 of damage and they didn't get anything anyway. Pull the load cover over on an Avant and its obvious you're hiding something IMO.

Thanks for the thoughts.

It has to be an Avant, as I can fit 2 mountain bikes in the boot with the rear seats up, leaving the backseats free for bags or people. This also means that the S4 is too small.

Not many suitable cars on your website at the moment Drybeer!

I was hoping to spend less than 20k, as that would get me a decent T5 or 530 Sport, I would just love to stick with Audi.

Any idea how much more expensive to run an S6 would be compared to the 2.8 Quattro Auto I have at the moment? I seem to average about 21mpg (up to 27mpg on a trip to Scotland).

Is servicing any more expensive?

The 4.2 Quattro might also be worth considering (one rung below the S6). There is one in the Classified section.

I ran an S6 for 8 months, it was a great car, only reason I sold it was I was fed up of filling it up twice a week.

Since you've already had an A6, why don't you go mental and get a Passat W8 4motion? You only live once, and how many people can say they have a W-engined car?

Was the W8 available as an estate? It's certainly an oddball car, and depreciated like a stone. Pretty bland interior on the Passat though, especially the fake plastic wood on the "premium" models.

Sean, what sort of MPG were you getting? Given that I only get 18mpg from my on my commute (hilly, twisty roads) an S6 sounds a bit scary.

Just checked Passats, the 4 litre W12 is available as an estate, VW want £14k for a 35k mile 02 Plate. Might be worth a look for a laugh.

I can't help thinking that a 530i Sport would be a far more sensible choice, and by the soinds of it a more interesting drive than these huge engined VAG cars.

Cheers

Tim

5-series Touring is a great car, but check the dimensions; your bikes might not fit in the back. 540i would be nice.

Have your considered E-class Mercs; you could get an E55 AMG. Those things have more boot space than a cave.
