Just dropped my Golf TDI 150 into the dealer this morning with broken aircon, called them this afternoon for an update to be told that a stone has somehow gone through the aircon compressor, therefore not covered under warranty and a lovely bill for £650 odd quid for a new one!

Anyone had a similar problem, or know of a cheaper fix alternative?

How can a stone go through the compressor????

The compressor is the part that pumps the gas through the system and is run off the polyvee belt via an electromagnetic clutch.
I seriously doubt- no scrub that; Theyre talking BOLLOX!

A stone could have gone through the aircon rad, very feasibly, but the compressor???
I do not think so.

Sounds like a con to me, dont pay, do get a written report then let us see it here.
Im sure someone else will also comment.

Ps The aircon rad if holed can be repaired by a competent workshop and itll cost nowhere near the extortionate price theyre saying.
Even a new aircon rad wouldnt cost that!

HTH.

Delta fox thanks for the reply, the dealer is adamant that the stone has damaged the compressor, at this stage I have asked them to order the parts, they cant do the job for a couple of weeks, I have asked them to show me the damaged compressor assuming I get them to fix it.

Does anyone know a good aircon specialist in North London or the Herts area for a second opinion?

...Maybe it's the aircon CONDENSOR that has been damaged? Quite probable actually - and they're pretty expensive. Not covered by warranty as promlem not caused by manufacturing defect/faulty part etc.

Maybe a stone has been thrown into the engine bay?

Yeah, Condensor sounds much more likely. It's the thing that looks like a radiator at the front of the engine bay.

I'd go to a specialist to get that fixed at half the price; the dealer would probably sub-contract the work out anyway.
