Not sure if this has everything you want to know...

Audi S3

In 2001 Audi substantially boosted the power output of its compact, muscular package, the S3. Based on the A3, this top athlete has an additional 15 horsepower and can now mobilise an impressive 165 kW (225 bhp). Combined with the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the four-cylinder turbocharged engine familiar from the Audi TT promises flexibility and supreme acceleration in all driving situations.

With its 1.8-litre displacement, two charge-air intercoolers, a type K 04 turbocharger and a maximum boost pressure of 2.1 bar, this engine develops a powerful torque of 280 Nm which becomes available at only 2200 rpm and is maintained right up to 5500 rpm. The power delivery is smooth, even at low engine speeds, and reaches its peak of 165 kW (225 bhp) at 5900 rpm. Thanks to this extra-powerful engine the S3 is a car with uncompromising dynamic performance. A top speed of 243 km/h and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds put the S3 ahead of rival cars, even many with much larger engines.

Sporting, agile handling, excellent directional stability on all road surfaces and entirely suitable comfort for day-to-day use are typical characteristics of this compact athlete with its quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Like all of Audi’s S models, the S3 is notable for its individual yet restrained styling. There are none the less many striking features, including the boldly flared wheel arches, large air intakes in the specially-shaped front bumpers and the standard-fit xenon headlights, accentuated by their clear glass covers. Fog lights are integrated into the front apron.

Thanks Mate!

Am I right in thinking they are fundementally the same chassis? Did the S3 have aluminium pannels like the RS4?

Cheers

The chassis on all golf / A3 / TT etc of similar age are all essentially the same except things like wheelbase, ARBs, springs and dampers etc.

S3 doesn't have Alu panels to the best of my knowledge but does have quite a few changes over the A3.

The golf you're talking about also has a smaller turbo and no 4WD as marc has said but they are hugely different cars, the golf is closer to a A3 1.8T FWD but not the S3 IMO.

Yes I'd second that.

Although it is of course fundamentally the same chassis, the S3 quattro (and A3 quattro) sits on a slightly longer wheelbase and has a completely different rear suspension system (multilink I think) from the front-wheel drive A3/Golf so as to cope with the need to keep all four wheels on the ground wherever possible.

The track is also wider.

Apart from that, as discussed a 180bhp Anniversary Golf 4 GTI has presumably the 1.8T motor in the same state of tune as the A3 1.8T quattro (which has 180bhp) whereas the standard Golf GTI Turbo and A3 1.8T have the same motor tuned to 150bhp. The S3 has the same engine but with a bigger turbo and kicks out either 210bhp (early cars) or 225bhp (later cars).

S3's were also better equipped with stuff like full electric leather recaros and xenon lamps being standard-fit.

I'd see the S3 as being more comparable to the original R32.
