Hi guys and galls

I'm contemplating a change of transport to a new Gti, are any of you running one at the moment and if so what do you think? Are they as good to drive as the mags say? Also what are the options that are a 'must have'? If you had a chance to spec one again what would you keep/change?

Yep! I've got a Mk5 GTi and yes, it is a good as everyone says. My spec. is red 3dr. with 17in Monza Wheels. DSG gearbox with multi function steering wheel. DSG is a deffo and comes with paddle shift standard so would probably not have multi function again unless you want the phone facility. Would not bother with 18inch wheels but might consider leather seats although standard is pretty good.Would definately spec the front centre armrest otherwise zenons, folding mirrors ect.down to personal choice but does rack up the price. Best spec would probably be White 3dr. DSG,leather trim & centre armrest

5 door (Diamond?) Black
Not DSG, but I would say go for this option looking back!
18 inch wheels (Good upgrade, look much better IMHO), Centre Armrest, Winter Pack, Anthracite Leather etc..

Excellent to drive

I was about to order one with the following spec in November 2005, but plans changed sadly:

Lux Pack 2
Winter Pack
Telephone Prep
Multi-Function S/wheel
Rear Side Airbags

Had mine 4 weeks now, replaced a Mk4 R32. GTi handles better and is better built, noise from 4 cylinder engine not as good as V6 though

Spec is 5 door, leather, armrest, cd changer, 17" wheels.

Take an extended test drive though - you need time and roads that you are familiar with to appreciate how well they handle.

I've got one as a company car and I love it. In my opinion its the perfect combination of speed, economy and practicality. Mine is a 5 door manual in Graphite Blue with leather interior.

Most of my work colleagues drive BMWs and yet they always seem to be wanting to borrow my car....

the problem is that a new GTi spec'd nicely costs £25k. £25k buys a AUC E46 M3; there is no contest.

I didn't realise you could get an E46 M3 with 5 doors The M3 is a totally different car and shouldn't be compared to any golf, of course if you've got no kids, and aren’t worried about the running costs of an M3 then it would be high up on everyone's list, but for a brand new family hot hatchback you could do much worse than a GTI

Looking at replacing the work mobile, so why the GTi over a similar A3 (say 2.0T FSI - Sport Sportback (5dr))?

Tried the non turbo Golf 2.0 GT and it was okay, just not special. I should be getting an A3 to try soon, if not special, I think it's back to a cheaper Vauxhall (1.8 SRi again?), and use the Griff at more.

The Focus can also be ramped up to 270+ bhp.................

You can pay for the upgrade with some of the cash you save by not getting the Golf

May be so but is that a reliable 270+bhp from a Ford? I doubt it.

Anyway standard vs standard the GTI is the better car as said above, car of the year, and all the top motoring programmes recommend it over the competition.

Its a Volvo 5 cyclinder engine. They are very unstressed in standard trim and if they are like other Volvo engines can go to over 300 bhp with no problems to reliability.

Forget stealer finance. I think on the GTi it is 9.5%APR (there is an eg on the VW GTi microsite). APR with high st providers is 5.8-5.9%nowadays.

I bought one for my wife just over 12 months back and its a truly great car this time around. She has a 5 door, in Laser Blue (I think its Laser!) on 18's with CD player. We needed to get her one quickly as I sold her Audi A4 to a friend and we took delivery in Jan05. Since then she has put about 18K on the clock and it just gets better. I can't imagine anyone would not love the car and I feel the plaudits it gets are very well deserved. It holds the road well, steers well and pulls well up to a 100, though over that it runs out of puff, not that it matters much of course.

Downsides, well the 18's are easy to mark (2 new ones so far!) and the paint is a little thin and easy to mark, though easy to polish out too. The ride on 18's is slightly harder than 17's, but still more than acceptable. I would not hesitate in recomending a MkV GTI to anyone and we are in fact about to get rid of this one, so if anyone is interested PM me, as she does not do any miles anymore and its wasted, oh, and she wants to go green!
